Step Brothers Trailer (John C. Reilly, Will Ferrell)

It's a comedy, I'd assume 90 minutes, possibly shorter.

Attending a press screening earlier this week, I think it was around 100 minutes. Maybe longer if you include the two extra scenes during the beginning and the end of the credits.

I'm a huge Anchorman fan but didn't care too much for Talladega. I love anything Will Ferrell is in, but eh. Semi-Pro was ok at best. I hope Ferrell isn't falling off. I really liked Blades of Glory.

The film is no longer than 105 minutes. The film started right at 7pm and with the footage during the credits, my friends and I were out of the theater before 8:50pm.
So to expand on my comments from earlier as I was in a rush...
In Anchorman, Ferrell is at the center with actors like Paul Rudd, Steve Carrell, Christina Applegate, David Koechner, Fred Willard, Chris Parnell and Vince Vaughn (amongst others) at back-up. If it weren't for the supporting cast, the film wouldn't be as funny as it is.
Even with (the weaker) Talladega Nights, Ferrell was at center again with actors like John C. Reilly, Gary Cole, Jane Lynch, Jack McBrayer, Amy Adams, Sacha Baron Cohen and Andy Richter at helm to bring the funny.
What also helps both films is that they're just so fucking absurd and insane that you can't help but to laugh.
With Step Brothers, it's just Ferrell and Reilly front and center with nobody to support them, because nobody else in the film is really a comedic actor. The film is too grounded in reality and never lets McKay and Ferrell to go all out. For their first R-rated feature, I was upset with how held back the two were (I was expecting the film to at least push the limits of the rating).
Now don't get me wrong, there's some hilarious moments within the film ...
The problem is that the scenes that are really funny are so few and far between that the material surrounding them is just really, really flat.
It's upsetting as I watched the Apatow/Ferrell-executive produced The Foot Fist Way earlier this week and laughed my ass off a lot more than I did with this film.
It kills me to say this, but I just wish they would do an Anchorman 2 at this point.

Four clips from the movie
These are absolutely killing me.
I've heard Adam Scott is the secret weapon in this, but from what I've seen of these clips, Richard Jenkins is going to completely steal this. Judging by these clips and trailers, this is probably going to be a much better, more demented R-rated version of those 90's "evil child" comedies like Problem Child and Clifford*...and I mean that in a good way.
* - Mary Steenburgen's presence in the latter makes this even more valid.

I have a hard time buying Mary Steenburgen as Will Ferrell's mom. There's about 14 years between them, but still...

Just got back from a midnight screening, can't remember laughing this hard in a movie in a while. It might just have been the right movie with the right crowd, but it definitely hits the spot if you're tapped into its extreme baby-man humor.
Of note, I liked Richard Jenkin's performance, and the whole Derek character with his henchmen. And of course I bought into the hilarity of these 40 year old ogres acting like babies from the beginning.

There's a lot of funny moments. But having Jenkins and Steenburgen cuss every other scene isn't funny. Some of the "heartfelt" moments don't gell as well as it could've been.
There's an odd Republican vibe going on in there, especially setting it up with a GW Bush quote. Hmm.
Grade: C+

I second CloverClover, not the BEST comedy I've ever seen, but I think the last time I was laughing so hard at a movie was The 40 Year Old Virgin. Ferrell and Reilly are at their deranged best, and Richard Jenkins and Mary Steenburgen are deadpan brilliance. There were AT LEAST 10 moments in this movie I completely lost my shit. Funnier than Anchorman, shoves an umbrella up Talladega Nights' ass and opens it Also some of the funniest lines I've heard this year in a movie:
My favorite scenes:
Definitely seeing it again.

Really funny but not as good as Talladega or Anchorman... the plot is fine but never mined completely for it's potential. All the side characters are either pointless or unlikeable and some of the 'RANDOM' humor bits feel like Funny or Die sketches that they rammed into this movie (sleepwalking, car singing, Dale's love affair)...now some of that stuff IS FUNNY - but it goes nowhere and feels shoehorned in.
Lots of great lines and enough moments to warrant seeing (I'll be seeing it again anyhow) but certainly more uneven than the other Ferrell/McKay efforts. One of the funnier movies of the year - but not the funniest - that honor goes to Tropic Thunder.

I thought it was pretty good, no real plot but pretty funny. Theater cracked up when you seen the testicles hitting the drum set.
Good movie, Ferrel and Reilly are great together, theres a few scenes in the trailer that arent in the movie, one I noticed was in the trailer you can see them in a car driving through the lawns.
Pretty good R rated comedy. Good cast suprised hot good looking Mary Steenburgen is given her age, shes still pretty hot.
8/10

No doubt you will laugh at a lot of the immature and gross R-rated humor on display, you can't help it because they just go-for-broke, and if you didn't like one joke, don't worry, another joke will show up very soon. The film itself is pretty uneven, and the most of the laughs are in the opening act, and it's an uphill battle for more comedic bits as it comes to an end, but you get the feeling they were running on fumes by that point.
I give it 2.5 stars, or a grade of C+.
