We rented this last night and I agree with everyone else. It could have been a lot better, but it ended up being rather plain and run of the mill. I actually thought Wahlberg would do more, but Joaquin was great in it.

At least we saw 3 seconds of Eva's nipple.

Are we sure that was her or a body double? They didn't show her face in that scene.

3.5 seconds. From what I read on IMDB, it was indeed her. She's not new to doing umm brief nudity lol. Training day is a perfect example. I read that she told her mother to come in after 5 minutes of the movie passed. So maybe it wasn't a double. But why wouldn't they show her face?? Interesting...

I watched this last night and thought it was great. Well directed, acted, and a very involving story. My expectations were pretty low so that may be why I enjoyed it more than most of you. I thought Phoenix's transformation was believable and thought it was an all-around satisfying movie.

Early Blondie, David Bowie's "Let's Dance", etc. Sure, it could have been a "retro" club. But I doubt it. There was also a Boy George look-a-like in the club walking around. Early Boy George that is. No one dressed like that in 1988.
James Gray said on the DVD that he wanted the character to be listening to music from when he was 20 years old.

Re: We Own The Night

Someone told me this is the film that The Departed wanted to be. I don't know WTF is wrong with them. The movie started out cool but after the car chase it went downhill. The film had A LOT of potential.

Spoiler:
Finding out it was Jumbo who betrayed him was a big letdown. And I don't know why they bothered to set in the 80s, it didn't feel like 1988 at all.

I enjoyed the movie more than most.

Loved the muffled rainy car chase.

The plot was brave at times. Didn't expect Wahlberg to cower in fear during the film's climax.

The movie still had something missing. And there were plenty of 'cop movie' moments that could make you roll your eyes.
