JAWS 4 gives a tribute of sorts to his death.

Hu Phan 02-11-08 02:10 AM

I thought he was magnificent. Absolutely magnificent. A real actor's actor.

A few memories:-

(1) His last scene in Marathon Man - coming through the door chalk-white. Not just dying, but a corpse that hasn't yet realised yet its time to stop moving.

(2) 2010 - sitting at the command console on Discovery. He knows something is behind him. He is about to look, the audience is just about screaming. Genuine terror. The only time I even came close to losing bowel control at a movie.

(3) Jaws - The whole gotta get a bigger boat scene.

(4) All That Jazz - Endlessly popping pills, looking at the world through drug induced, cynical dementia. So disconnected it hurts. He utterly owned that film. He bent the script over a kitchen bench and reamed it. What acting. What class.

Rest In Peace Great One.

Why couldn't it have been Rob Schneider?

:(

Anyone happen to catch this wiki entry from last night?

In 2004, Scheider was diagnosed with myeloma, a cancer of the plasma cells. In June 2005, he underwent a bone marrow transplant to successfully treat the cancer which was classified as being in partial remission. He died February 10, 2008, in Little Rock, Arkansas, of complications from a shark attack.[1] That means he's dead.

I just converted Last Embrace to DVD last Friday...

Damn! I forgot Sorcerer. Great, great movie as well.

It's REALLY weird because my stepdad just made this huge thing out of ordering Blue Thunder from DD. He was watching it the other night too and I was thinking someone should give Scheider a job like Hal Holbrook's in Into the Wild. And then he died. Damn.

reverie 02-11-08 11:01 AM

I was totally shocked to find out he had passed away. I haven't seen him in much but what I have he was great in! Heck, he was great as Frank Castle's dad in "The Punisher". Sad that he's gone..

OldBoy 02-11-08 11:14 AM

I just saw "The French Connection" on Saturday. Such a fun actor to watch, even in the not so great ones like "The Punisher". Tragically underrated imo, "52 Pick-Up" anyone? Needlesstosay he was one of the good ones and this is a sad loss.

rexinnih 02-11-08 11:18 AM

You'll be missed Roy. RIP.

Cardiac161 02-11-08 11:30 AM

One of my favorite actors fm the 70s. No matter what film he was in, he always had this incredible presence.

Loved him in Jaws, French Connection, Sorcerer, The Seven-Ups, Naked Lunch, All That Jazz...

Kicker_of_Elves 02-11-08 11:33 AM

R.I.P Chief

rkndkn 02-11-08 11:52 AM

He was in so many great and favorite films of mine. . . R.I.P., Roy.

Farewell and adieu. :rip:

Roy Scheider on JAWS:

"Jaws was the greatest movie ever made!"

Roy Scheider on JAWS 2:

"Jaws 2 was a damn contract fulfillment!"

jeffkjoe 02-11-08 12:46 PM

When Roy Scheider is watching little Alex Kintner being eaten alive on Amity Beach, and he realizes the magnitude of what he's witnessing, it's....it's unforgettable really.

Eplicon 02-11-08 01:40 PM

RIP. I still consider Jaws to be my most thrilling movie experiences ever.

Funny enough, Scheider was one of my favorite action heroes back in the '70s, alongside with Superman and Luke Skywalker. All he got to do was blow up a killer shark.

jeffkjoe 02-11-08 03:10 PM

Okay, so chalk up another childhood icon who's now dead:

Captain Kangaroo
Mister Rogers
Alec Guiness
John Ritter
Christopher Reeve
Roy Scheider

I feel old.

Because of that scene...to this day whenever I see Keir Dullea pop up in an episode of Law and Order it freaks me the hell out.

B5Erik 02-11-08 11:43 PM

When I picked up a newspaper today and flipped it over only to see the picture of Roy Scheider and the note that he had died I was just stunned.

Talk about a guy who always seemed so vibrant in his performances - he was one of the best.

The funny thing is that I just picked up a copy of Blue Thunder a couple of weeks ago. I've never seen it, but since Roy Scheider was in it I thought I'd give it a shot. I'll have to watch it this weekend. (That's one of those movies I've been interested in watching for over 20 years - but I've never gotten around to it.)

I thought that Seaquest DSV was a very entertaining show, and I just can't imagine ANYONE else playing Nathan Bridger. Just like I can't imagine ANYONE else playing Chief Brody. Or Bob Fosse! Scheider was a very, very talented actor - and a one of a kind.

He will be missed. I know I'll miss him.

Damn. This just sucks.

Supermallet 02-11-08 11:48 PM

My favorite performances of his were from All That Jazz and Naked Lunch. An excellent and underrated actor. R.I.P.

I feel old.

Captain Kangaroo died? Oh wow. :goodbye:

islandclaws 02-12-08 11:06 AM

Damn shame. I didn't know the guy was in such poor health. I've been on a Roy binge since I read the news. I was about to watch something else on Sunday when I read it on Yahoo literally just as it broke. I watched Jaws. Then Jaws 2 and Blue Thunder yesterday. Tonight French Connection, then probably a couple others over the next few nights. Roy was a damn fine actor and he will certainly be missed.
