Jaws was a great performance of course, but I was always a fan from 2010, and his presence in Seaquest helped keep it grounded when it would otherwise have been a cheesefest.

RIP

I was just watching Blue Thunder the other night. RIP, Roy.

About time somebody mentioned this movie. I think Jaws is the only movie some people associate with Roy, which is unfortunate. He did a shitload of awesome movies. The Sorcerer is another one.

"Jaws" was the first truly memorable experience I had in a movie theater as a kid, and Roy Scheider's performance was a big part of the movie's appeal. He and Richard Dreyfuss played off of each other really well.

I'll be watching "Jaws" when I get home from work tonight.

Aw man.

Goodbye Roy, and thanks for the great performances.

He had great qualities about him as an actor. He was very tough, yet likable. I didn't realize he was that old, either. It's very sad.

Wow, what a shock to hear about his passing. Great actor who will be missed. I always like his scene with John Lithgow in 2010:

John Lithgow: I miss green. Nothing's green up here.
Roy Scheider: I miss a hot dog.
John Lithgow: Houston. The Astrodome. Good hot dogs.
Roy Scheider: You can't grow good hot dogs inside. Yankee Stadium. September. The hot dogs have been boiling since April. Now that's a hot dog.

One of my favorite actors as well. Loved his take on Heywood Floyd in 2010.

Roy Scheider was a terrific actor. Jaws, The Sorcerer, Marathon Man, 52 Pick Up, Blue Thunder, Romeo is Bleeding, The Seven-Ups, Cohen & Tate, Klute, all great performances.

Every time I have a hot dog at any stadium, that movie line always pops into my head.

Goodbye, Chief Brody. Everytime we go into the water, we pray there will be a Chief Brody there to protect us.

Odd. I recently got onto a bit of a Jaws kick after seeing it on TCM last week. I'd be reading up on the production of the film and had *gasp* even considered finally watching my copy of the 30th anniversary edition.

It's Not right for such fine-actors like Roy,Heath to die the way they did!

"But I'm telling you, and I'm telling everybody at this table that that's a shark! And I know what a shark looks like, because I've seen one up close. And you'd better do something about this one, because I don't intend to go through that hell again!"

Rest In Peace Roy.

JAWS 4 gives a tribute of sorts to his death.

Hu Phan 02-11-08 02:10 AM

I thought he was magnificent. Absolutely magnificent. A real actor's actor.

A few memories:-

(1) His last scene in Marathon Man - coming through the door chalk-white. Not just dying, but a corpse that hasn't yet realised yet its time to stop moving.

(2) 2010 - sitting at the command console on Discovery. He knows something is behind him. He is about to look, the audience is just about screaming. Genuine terror. The only time I even came close to losing bowel control at a movie.

(3) Jaws - The whole gotta get a bigger boat scene.

(4) All That Jazz - Endlessly popping pills, looking at the world through drug induced, cynical dementia. So disconnected it hurts. He utterly owned that film. He bent the script over a kitchen bench and reamed it. What acting. What class.

Rest In Peace Great One.
