He broke that tradition with Centurion. Thankfully, until this thread was bumped, that film made me forget about this pile of crap called Doomsday.

Unsurprisingly, Centurion is the only turd he's made so far.

Except for the cluttered opening action sequence, I really enjoyed Centurion. Among his films that I've seen (still need to see Dog Soldiers), I'd count Doomsday as his only turd.

I absolutely love Doomsday. It's one of my favorite movies, actually.

Doomsday was fun in a goofy Mad Max set to 11 sort of way, The Descent was all around excellent, and Dog Soldiers was everything you'd hope for from something released as a SyFy Original (It isn't actually a SFO Movie but they picked up rights for the US and released it as such).

imo, Centurion brought nothing new to the table, it wasn't exciting in execution or script, it just sort of was -- maybe it's because of all the Asian historical epics I'd seen in recent years, maybe not, either way it was a bore. However, with the critical acclaim he received for his episode of Game of Thrones (S02E09 - Blackwater), I suspect he will be revisiting "historical epic" sooner rather than later. That is, after his Dracula movie next year.

What I liked about Centurion was that it was basically an anti-epic. Most so-called epics build up to some large scale action sequence that loses all sense of intimacy with the characters. Centurion, on the other hand, starts with a big battle early on (which happens to be the weakest part of the film) and concludes on a very small scale personal struggle. That really set it appart from its ilk for me.

I think my main issue is I just didn't care about the characters or their plight. But to each their own, glad some people liked it! It is a competently made feature.

After I saw it my first thought was....this man. Get Marshall or Hyams (w/ his dad to get that nice visual) for EX3. Marshall really has a nice look to his films. He can do the action as well.

I actually saw this on its opening night in 2008. I had recently moved to Daytona and was taking a year long sabbatical from these forums, hence why I never posted. I loved it, but I also had quite a few drinks in me when I watched it, which I think should be a requirement for viewing.
Afterward all I could think was that Marshall must really love Escape From New York and the Mad Max movies.

Loved how they used Frankie Goes to Hollywood in the final action scene!

Thought I'd pop this in for a bit. I had to read and chuckle my ass off at some of the earlier comments from years ago about this being a shit film.

If you loved Fury Road then Doomsday is the next best thing (outside of the Mad Max films we have) until the FR Blu-ray hits stores.

It's a fun movie. I actually get bored when they meet the medieval region.

I have needed to watch my copy of Doomsday since Mad Max Fury Road was released. For those that thought Mad Max was soft on violence and gore can just watch this movie.
