Cloverfield would have been just another run of the mill monster flick destroying NYC if it wasn't shot the way it was. That's what made it awesome and different.
I don't know how one can compare this to The Mist. They are two totally different stories and two totally different films.

Overheard at my local video store 10 minutes ago:
Customer: Will you be renting Cloverfield tomorrow?
Clerk: Sure. Have you seen it?
Customer: No, but I can't wait to bitch about it.
Clerk: It's not that bad. It's about shallow, superficial people reacting to a major disaster.
Customer: Oh, is it about Iraq?

BTW, Montreal had its own Cloverfield last night when the Habs beat Boston 5-0. As usual, the disenfranchised English-speaking minority jackasses saw this as permission to destroy their own city, their version of "culture" and "social interaction":

Fourteen police cars were destroyed or set on fire, shop windows were smashed and stores were looted. Sixteen rioters were arrested. If convicted, they face a few years in French-immersion class where they might learn civilized behaviour. Failing that, it's deportation to the US...

Just saw it on DVD. I'm not really disappointed because of the 1,001 spoilers contained in this thread and in other sources but I was suprised to find it sadder and more violent than I expected and certainly not worthy of a PG 13 rating, unless our children have definitely turned into unfeeling mutants (which is certainly a possibility). This, in spite of the fact that the actors are so young, pretty, plastic and generic that it's almost impossible to feel anything for them. The film's jerkiness also made me sick in parts and I admit I fast-forwarded through some of it (with the subtitles on).
I was also sorry that given the fact that the monster looks like Chtulu, it wasn't given more of a backstory, even in the extra material on the disc. I especially liked the link to the "Bloop" ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bloop ) which was established early on in the French-language Wikipedia entry on Cloverfield (http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cloverfield). A missed opportunity...
The full bloop: http://www.oceanexplorer.noaa.gov/ex...dia/bloop.html
On the plus side, I really enjoyed the end-titles music, which is the only way to hear the complete ROAR! (Cloverfield Overture) by Michael Giacchino, which is truly worth the price of the rental.

Finally spotted the mystery falling object. Hmmm, intentional, or just the SFX boys having some fun?
Caught it on dvd for the first time last night. Loved it, although did end up FF'ing through the first 18 minutes. Something I've never done on a first viewing before. I managed to work up some sympathy as things went on, but I can't say I ever actually cared if the little espresso sippers lived or died. I actually felt more symapthy for the monster. Especially after the director speculated that it was just a lost baby.
Can't really think of anything to praise that hasn't already been covered already. Though were any other monster film fans going a little nuts during the final scene? The kid was going on about the incredible all-out battle going on outside, but he keeps the camera locked on his ugly mug? I can understand the dramatics of the shot, but I was still wanting to tear my hair a bit in frustration.
Really the only way I could see a sequel working would be if hey did it as an after-action documentary, with interviews with scientists and military personal basing doing a time line of the first clues, all the way through the attack, with plenty of speculation on its origin, and lots of combat footage.
Unfortunately I doubt the teenaged 'we hate anything different', crowd with the attention span of a gnat would go for it.

People who need it all spoonfed to them just bug the hell out of me. Probably the same crowd who wished they'd filmed the govt lab experiment gone bad scene in The Mist. Or hated Blair Witch Project because a seven foot rubber monster didn't jump out and go 'boo!' at the end.
