PUBLIC ENEMIES (Michael Mann), 2009 - Depp, Bale

This is turning into one of my most anticipated films....

Bale Joining Depp in Mann's Public Enemies
Source: Variety January 11, 2008

Variety says that Christian Bale (The Dark Knight) is in negotiations to join Johnny Depp in Michael Mann's upcoming Public Enemies.

According to the trade, Bale will play Melvin Purvis, the legendary FBI agent who led the manhunt for John Dillinger. Depp is starring as Dillinger in the film, which is set up at Universal and is slated to begin production in March.

Mann is producing via his Forward Pass, with Kevin Misher and his Misher Films. Jane Rosenthal of Tribeca is executive producing.

I'm going to the local multiplex tonight to wait in line for tickets to this movie.

Who's with me?

......

Seriously, though. I am really looking forward to this one. Plus, I hear they're going to be making it in my home state of Wisconsin. I may have to drive up north just to scope this out once filming commences.

 Can't wait!

Count me in. I don't even need to read the details. Mann, Depp and Bale? That cast alone sold me.

Mann tackling the 1930's. Cannot wait to see him bring his visual style to this film.

Is he shooting this digital, like his last two flicks?

Groucho 03-20-08 04:40 PM

I love Bale, but I really don't see him as Flava Flave. Sorry!

Zen Peckinpah 03-20-08 06:58 PM

Michael Mann directing Johnny Depp as John Dillinger, with Christian Bale for good measure. If Javier Bardem or Edward Norton or Robert Downey Jr. was on board I'd want to see this even more than I already do. PLEASE get this out for December.

Jeremy Smith from CHUD.com gave the script a review nothing short of glowing. He says if it's done right (and knowing Mann it will be, Miami Vice be damned) this could be Heat: The Prohibition Era. Also good to see John Ortiz getting a push after his memorable supporting turn in American Gangster.

And Marion Cotillard:  God that woman is hot as hell...when not playing Edith Piaf.

PopcornTreeCt 03-20-08 07:53 PM

Wow, that pic of the 1930's has me drooling. Can't wait for this.

Who knew the 1930s had so many neon lights and pastel colors?

j/k

I'm looking forward to this. I've been a fan a Mann's for some time, and Depp and Bale have been a winning streaks for the last couple of years.

I would think he would shoot this on film. Digital wouldnt work very well for the 1930's, IMO. Too crisp.

Oh man, this is going to be great. That picture up above is just awesome:

Where do you live aktick?
I live in Horicon, but didn't get a chance to head over to Columbus to check out the shoot.

A friend got some pictures yesterday. They were shooting at a courthouse in a town of about 2,500 (which is the county seat of a county of about 15,000...yeah, not real big).

This is actually my aunt, who has some property that Depp's dressing room trailer or whatever was parked on:

This was Depp walking to his trailer in the morning, I think:

They're done shooting in Columbus.
I know the news this morning said they were in Indiana, not sure about Oshkosh.

Billy Crudup has landed a role in the currently filming depression-era gangster pic being directed by Michael Mann called PUBLIC ENEMIES. He will be FBI director J. Edgar Hoover.

Dudikoff 04-03-08 12:22 PM

The ultra-realistic tommy gun battle towards the end will be amazing! Seriously.

Zen Peckinpah 04-03-08 02:21 PM

Stephen Lang has also joined the cast as a Texas Ranger on Dillinger's trail.

Die-hards who possess Mann-crushes will remember that he played the barbecued tabloid reporter in Manhunter, and I was getting worried there would be no regulars from previous movies, but alas there will be. Also seems like he's getting a resurgence showing up in this and then Avatar.

Kicker_of_Elves 04-03-08 03:21 PM

Cannot wait for this one.

Yavin 04-03-08 03:27 PM

Sounds like a sure-fire combo of talent! I'm going to hire a homeless guy to stand in line for me at the multiplex right now!

Zodiac_Speaking 04-03-08 04:54 PM

Man (no pun intended) due i wish there was a Warners logo in fornt of this and being filmed in glorious black and white!

Can't wait regardless.
