Yeah but would that have made a better movie?

I enjoyed it, and agree that if they didn't explain everything I don't think it would have made the movie better.

Behind "In Bruges", it's the best movie of the year so far (IMO)

I watched this last night. I expected it to be good, but not that good. Loved it.

lots of really talented people who worked on other things I've liked in the past also worked on The Orphanage

this is Bayona's first full length feature but not his first time directing

That's pretty sad, especially considering there have been better horror films to be released this year (e.g. The Signal -- and might I dare say it, Cloverfield).

oh yeah the actors were good but I would consider them more participants and the writer and director the creator but maybe is because the acting was good and the movie wasn't so I separate them in my head.

You're kidding, right? I haven't seen "The Signal" yet. But "Cloverfield" is a joke compared to "The Orphange". Sure, it's a fun movie. But beyond the great special effects and effective camera work, it's nothing but pure fluff. And the script is numb skull. Which made the movie just your basic typical horror fare. "The Orphange" leaves much to the imagination. Is psychological. Smart. And is extremely well written. Night and day my friend.

Dont most movies require a suspension of disbelief?

watched it the other night... Pretty good movie, -but was a bit letdown.

Though you really felt for the main character, -I just didnt really feel scared at all with this movie.
A great 'sad' movie, -but definately not a scary/horror movie for me (maybe I was expecting too much from the reviews).

Sure they do, but in different ways. I'm not usually persuaded by life after death scenes or people coming back from the dead. This was a movie that was mostly about "normal" people and not some whacked out sci-fi flick where you have to suspend belief almost the whole movie. Like I said, it's only for certain movies where I personally can't really get caught up in buying what's for sale. Evenso, this movie was definitely better than the average horror flick.

Spoiler:
Either they show Laura down the pills while holding her dead son and they fade away right there. Or if they want to show a little bit of a happy ending they could have ended it right before showing the dad at the gravesite... instead they went for the happiest ending showing that the whole family will be happy again because the dad will join them

All in all, I didn't HATE the ending. I thought it worked well but it could have been better. As a whole I thought the movie was one of the best ghost stories/horror movies I've seen in a long time. It didn't scare me, which is a feeling that I miss from horror movies, and I was expecting this one to. But that did not take away from the movie at all. I look forward to revisiting this one in a few months to pick up on "clues" that I missed the first time around.

A lot of the elements in this movie were very much like Pan's Labyrinth, right down to the ending. I guess that's why, while I enjoyed it, I didn't like it as much as I was expecting to.

Did I miss something? When was that even so much as implied?

Forgive the bump. My question is actually along the same lines as the above, though I wanted to ask it before I read this thread. At the end,
Spoiler:
does Laura die or does she go "back in time"? I took it that she downed her pills and lost consciousness, eventually dying. But before she died, she had a dream that was the ending we saw. The memorial at the end was her gravesite and Carlos was visiting the room one more time before selling the house. That's when he found the medallion.
Thoughts?

Just saw this gem. Amazing. Such intensity and mood. Oozes with the best of multiple genres. Can't believe it took me so long to pop it in. Excellent!

Haven't seen it in a while. From what I remember it was good but not great.
Definitely better than the overrated The Devil's Backbone.

But I just did. Guillermo Del Toro is one of the most overrated directors working today.

Look into Michel Franco, Amat Escalante & Carlos Reygadas.
