That, and many many other nature documentaries that have been made over the years.

Photograph was a poor choice by him though. It would make more sense if he said "every film contains some externally created visual imagery" That would include photos, drawings, videos, etc...
My bad, I should've re-read his piece more closely before posting. That's what I get for assuming Ebert wouldn't run a letter by someone with such an idiotic "theory".

I don't think he's saying that every movie has a shot of a photograph/painting/drawing in it, as many here seem to be implying. Maybe I'm misinterpreting him, but I'm thinking the use of the word 'photograph' was just a poor choice by him. The guy probably has too much free time on his hands, but the next time I watch a movie, I'll most likely notice if there's a still shot. The same thing has happened to me after reading an article and watching a youtube video on the Wilhelm scream.
Even then, there are films without freeze frames. The only way to make your definition broad enough to encompass all of film is to say that since all of film/video is a series of still images, then all film/video contains still images. But that does not make for a particularly insightful observation.

He's correct that it's a very common visual shorthand to quickly reveal something about what a character is like by showing the pictures he has on his desk or his mantelpiece, or to show what a character is thinking by having him look at a picture. It shows that the character lost something or wants something or is missing something, and that the character comes from somewhere and had an existence before the viewer encountered him in the movie. It's better to show a picture of the guy with his kids than to have one character ask him "Do you have kids?" and have him say "Yes."

But it's not in every movie, and this guy horribly distorts the point in his claim that it is. If there's a room in a movie, chances are that the director is going to want something hung on it, and that something is likely to be some kind of picture. That doesn't prove anything except that movies are filmed on dressed sets instead of in empty rooms.
