Kirk in this one is infallible -- he resists Sybok's brainwashing even though every other member of the crew, including Spock, is susceptible to it, and then he sees through the God of Giant Pixel's lies (what a horrible special effect) and stands up to him. He even falls from the top of a mountain, but knows he won't die because ... well, he's mother-frakkin' Kirk!

Yeah.
It's funny - I agree with alot of the things the haters are saying here but for some reason this film owns a soft spot of my heart. So soft I'd go as far as saying of the original cast flicks I like this 3rd best behind II and VI. I never really cared much for IV at all. To me, that's the departure film.

Understood, but Khan is still the gold standard in my opinion. V is not without merit, and the story could have been great (hell, half the original series episodes seemed to feature a not-so-benevolent god, only to be exposed as a fake by Kirk/Spock in the end). Clearly they were unwilling (Harve Bennett, Meyer) or unable (budget) to camouflage Shatner's limitations as a director and writer. Oh, and they let some dude build the special effects out of a garage somewhere in New Jersey.
And I still rank V above the first film.

Star Trek V wasn't as bad as Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Star Trek: Insurrection or Star Trek: Nemesis.
The movie failed for two primary reasons: Shatner got lousy special effects work (ILM wasn't used for the movie because the "A team" and "B teams" weren't available...and Shatner thought the "C team" would be the "third best team", although ILM doesn't divide up their teams that way - each are of equal quality) and Paramount never let him shoot the ending he wanted - they basically pulled the plug on the movie to get it out for the summer of '89.
It would have been nice if Paramount had given Shatner the money to finish his vision on the recent Special Edition DVD - but again Paramount didn't want to invest the money.

Well the special effects are bad, but thats not my main problem with the film.
The dialogue for most of the film is just utterly ridiculous, the scenarios are so far fetched its not funny. The whole rescue is a joke and the takeover of the enterprise is even worse...and then it gets worse from there...with bumbling Scotty and his bitch Uhura.
The only neat part of the movie is the scene with Kirk, Bones and I think Spock - the whole "I need my pain" speech. Classic Shatner and Trek.
Other than that, the movie blows. Shatner tried to blow off how bad the movie was by blaming Paramount for the budget, well guess what the budget had nothing to do with the utter lack of direction the film had.
