Re: Sword and the Sorcerer: Tales of the Ancient Empire is being made

I'm definitely sold on this. It may or may not be good but I certainly want to see it.

A special edition of Sword and the Sorcerer would be nice too. I'd read somewhere that Sword and the Sorcerer did better than the producers had expected so they never bothered to make the sequel. Not sure if this is true or not, but I'd love to hear the official reason the sequel wasn't made in the 80's.

That makes no sense. If it exceeded expectations, a sequel would have been greenlit immediately. If however it underperformed or flat out bombed, any planned sequels would have been scrapped.

Re: Sword and the Sorcerer: Tales of the Ancient Empire is being made

Like I said I'm not sure if that's the official reason, but I had read it somewhere. It was supposed to be a case where the producers made enough money, so they didn't feel the need to make another movie. You're right though, it sounds a lot like Internet hearsay. I'll try to find a link to that info.

Thats why I'd like to see a special edition of SatS. Maybe someone from the actual production can tell us why the sequel never happened in the 80's.

According to boxofficemojo it made 39 million domestic. They do not show the budget. I think that made it a modest success but not enough for a sequel.

It probably didn't cost much to make either.

Re: Sword and the Sorcerer: Tales of the Ancient Empire is being made

Here's the info I was looking for:

Despite grossing only $40 million at the box office, "The Sword and the Sorcerer" was actually the most profitable independant film of it's year. $40 million may not seem like too much money today, but when it is taken into consideration that the film cost less than $2 million to produce, you have a profit of at least $38 million. As director Albert Pyun once said, the only reason that a sequel was never made is that the producer's made enough money out of the film to never have to work again, so production company Group One films closed their doors forever.
This came from fast-rewind.com. I don't have enough posts yet to post a direct link.

Funny thing: While at Fantastic Fest last month the question I was asked more than any other was not about any of the films at the festival. No, instead it revolved around a news story I posted about Tales of an Ancient Empire - Albert Pyun´s follow up to 1980´s cult hit fantasy picture The Sword And The Sorcerer. You may think you´re the only guy around with a weak spot for Pyun´s brand of cult epic but trust me: You´re not. We are legion.

We´ve been following this one closely since before it even went before camera and with some big star power added - a pony tail sporting martial artist, anyone? - and the film now in post production we´ve got a look at the first clip, one which features Kevin Sorbo and Melissa Ordway as the half-sibling children of original star Lee Horseley, meeting one another for the first time.

This looks like a piece of shit film. Now if it was a porno, then it would be decent.

Holy Chreeeeeeeest. That looks bad. I'll still watch it in hopes of seeing the tri-bladed sword again. Funny how they didn't show Lambert or Kilmer in this trailer.

Looking at that trailer, I can actually imagine the movie they probably thought they were making Too bad the reality seems so totally different.

But you know I'll rent it anyway...

Re: Sword and the Sorcerer: Tales of the Ancient Empire is being made

This film looks bad for a tv movie even. TV movies are better and more cinematic now, even tv shows are better looking than that. It looks like a big budget porno from 1995.

She was the only visually appealing factor in that drab looking trailer.
I don't think even an overdose of nostalgia can save this one.

Re: Sword and the Sorcerer: Tales of the Ancient Empire is being made

Huh? That looked like a bunch of random clips thrown together. Maybe we can at least get a decent two pack of this and the original Sword and Sorcerer with a better transfer.

Kevin Sorbo is a guarantee that it sucks.
