I always thought it was Delaware.

I always thought it was a composite of cities/states:

Chicago
New York
Seattle
Los Angeles

That library Morgan Freeman does his research in is the New York library, right? The famous one?

The final scene makes it clear it's all happening in that autistic kid's snow globe.

"Se7en" takes place in a world where I want to stab the person responsible for putting a 7 where the v should go.

When is Batman: The Animated Series set? You see lots of tommy guns, black and white TVs, blimps, and diesel engines, and 1930s-style technology and Art Deco art, but in Justice League they have a teleporter, orbital lasted satellites, nanotechnology, and starships that can fly at light speed, and in the Batman Beyond they have flying cars and sentient robots? I like the lack of a sense of a date. It gives the film a timeless quality. How many once cutting-edge techno-thrillers now look hilariously dated? I like the lack of the sense of a date, it means it'll age much better.

THe whole film was shot in LA. The library is a building that's been used in lots of films. Originally a bank, it sits vacant and is only used for movies and tv. It's been in tons of stuff.

Nice. Testament to the production design. Hell, and I'm a native and I still couldn't tell it was shot here except for the desert scenes at the end.

Los Angeles. I recognized some of the buildings when the helicopter takes off toward the end.

Wikipedia lists it as "Seven" but IMDB lists it as "Se7en". I've seen movie posters and DVD cases using both. Is there an official way of spelling it?

Re: Where does "Seven" take place?

When it was released, all the marketing was strictly Seven. TV, newspaper, poster, trailer, on the marquee at the theater, everything. But when I bought a ticket the title printed on the ticket was Se7en. I thought it was kind of funny, like maybe the manager did it as a joke.

So it's been muddled from the beginning. I think someone very much wanted it to be Se7en but marketing thought it would confuse people.

Can someone remind me how the title appears during the opening credits?

hanshotfirst1138 06-06-14 10:22 PM

All I remember about the opening credits is the creepy music :p.

One of Wikipedia's many silly rules is they don't use "stylized" names no matter how official they are -- no Se7en, no Ke$ha, no Arli$$, etc. I believe IMDb's policy is to use the title as it appears in the opening credits.

That's one of the things I really liked about the X-Files. Everywhere Mulder and Scully went, even if it was a named location, was always a drab, anonymous place. Which, it turns out, was Vancouver.

But it really added to the sense that they were operating in the fringes and back alleys of the world.

You people are all wrong... It is in Bismarck North Dakota.

Anyone notice in Se7en that it only seemed to be raining on the car Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt were driving around in? All the people on the streets around them looked dry, with no umbrellas and were casually walking around like it was a nice day.

Sorry to thread-jack, this thread got me thinking about that possible "blooper" in the movie...

If Fincher filmed that scene now the background, rain and car would be CGI :)

Re: Where does "Seven" take place?

Seven (yeah, I refuse to call it "Se7en"... except I just did. Oh well) absolutely needs to take place in an unnamed city. Because the movie is so grim, so pessimistic, so hopeless, you'd lose that if it were a familiar metropolis. Like if it were LA you could just say, well eventually it'll be sunny again, and you can take a bus to Venice Beach. Repeat for any major city. It's presumed that the city of Seven must have some upscale cultural area, but because we don't know the exact city we are unable to pinpoint it. And thus, the pervasive pessimism that has let Somerset become so jaded is passed on to the viewer.

Putting Seven in a known city is like watching Memento in reverse (which I'm aware can be done on the deluxe edition DVD); you rob the film of the very effect it's trying to achieve.

As I recall, there was an elevated "monorail" type public train system, so I always thought it took place in Chicago.
