It's a classic because most people can relate to some aspect of it - the crazy, overbearing family who shows up when you least want them to, the excesses of the holiday season, but in a more humorous, outrageous manner.

My favorite is Clark's light display causing several neighborhoods to lose power.

I've seen this movie countless times, but had never noticed that before. I caught the scene when it was on TBS last night. Hilarious.

Absolutely NOT overrated.

The dinner scene is one of the funniest in cinematic history.

Great movie, but it's my least favorite of the Vacation series. (I'm only counting the main four of course, not the spinoffs like Christmas Vacation 2.)

Plus, who doesn't like the "Christmas Vacation" song at the end?

You think Vegas Vacation is better than Christmas Vacation?

Scary.
So there's a sequel to a sequel... without even seeing it, you know that one has to suck big-time!

Just thought of another I loved, when Clark offers to buy Eddie's kids presents and they are in the store and Eddie says: And why don't you get something for yourself clark, something really nice.

I wouldn't go as far as to say Vegas is better then Christmas but I have a certain fondness in my heart for Vegas. It has some redeemable qualities unlike European.

I actually do. I think I like that it has the 'road trip' feel of the first two, whereas Christmas Vacation just doesn't feel like it belongs in the series. It seems like a script that was rewritten to be a Vacation film.

This movie is just not funny. I finally watched it last year on HD DVD because I kept hearing how great it was...and was bored to tears. Vegas Vacation was better.

Seconded. I watched it back in '04 and was bored and nothing about it stuck with me. I can barely remember anything that happened in that movie immediately after having watched it.

This is my favorite Christmas movie. Not much about it doesn’t make me laugh.

Kind of stunned that some find nothing funny about this movie. So many great characters. And so many great lines. “Is Rusty still at in the Navy?” alone is one of my favorites.

I'm glad that AMH has found steady work over the years, but Johnny Galecki is by far a bigger star. First "Roseanne", then "The Big Bang Theory", and then "The Conners". But to be fair, Anthony is the best Rusty in the National Lampoon series. And he starred in my all-time favorite high school movie. "Sixteen Candles".

I wonder how much has to do with relatability. When I watch Christmas Vacation, I am reminded of all the family Christmases I had as a kid. Clark reminds me of my dad, Aunt Bethany reminds me of my grandma, etc.

The Cousin Eddy stuff kind of pulls me out but Randy Quaid is hilarious in this even if I can’t necessarily relate to him.

I was going to respond to the same quote.

There may be a slight difference in the level of stardom between AMH and Galecki.

I had also pulled the comment to respond to.
