The Man From Earth (2007)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0756683/

Plot:
An impromptu goodbye party for Professor John Oldman becomes a mysterious interrogation after the retiring scholar reveals to his colleagues he is an immortal who has walked the earth for 14,000 years. Acclaimed Sci-Fi writer Jerome Bixby conceived this story back in the early 1960's. It would come to be his last great work, finally completing it on his deathbed in April of 1998.

Incredibly engrossing film. The acting and cinematography makes it seem like a made for TV movie but the script is brilliant. Watch it.

9/10

Looks interesting. I will surely see this, if not at the movies, then when it comes out on DVD.

Indie film producer thanks pirates for downloading his movie

Eric D. Wilkinson, producer of the independent film "Jerome Bixby's The Man From Earth," has written a letter to the editor of Releaselog, a site that reviews leaked movies available on P2P networks. He hasn't written to complain, mind -- he wrote in to say how much promotional value the piracy of his movie on P2P has generated, and how that's turning into real sales for him.

I am sending you this email after realizing that our website has had nearly 23,000 hits in the last 12 days, much of it coming from your website. In addition, our trailer, both on the www.manfromearth.com site and other sites like YouTube, MySpace and AOL has been watched nearly 20,000 times AND what’s most impressive is our ranking on IMDb went from being the 11,235th most popular movie, to the 5th most popular movie in 2 weeks (we are also the #1 independent film on IMDb & the #1 science fiction film on IMDb). How did this all happen? Two words: Torrent / File Sharing sites (well, four words and a slash).

Excellent thinking Sci-Fi movie I've seen in a long time. There's no special effects, but it'll keep you interested from the beginning to end.

I gave it 2.5/5 and wrote this about it on another site:

This film was probably a fascinating piece of sci-fi writing, but as a
movie it was a pretty weak effort. From the cinematography to the
acting - this was a non-budget sci-fi channel original movie.
Sub-career actors giving hammy performances - often skating the line of
annoying.

I have to admit that the basic story here is very interesting and
thought provoking. I can't say it was perfectly written, but this is
science fiction. I think this would work good as a play. I'd also like
to see this re-done with a better cast and director.

In the end though - there was nothing here that gave me chills or
touched me in some special way or gave me any sort of epiphany like it
seems to have done for so many others... At best it held my attention
until the end.

It's very much average and mediocre - it will end up being the sort of
thing people will reference in speculative conversations with their
friends to help them feel smarter. It will end up being shown to high
school and college students by that one hip teacher. It's very
accessible and gently challenges religion, so it's perfect for that.

I've definitely seen better science fiction movies - with or without
action or special effects.

Finally saw this and must say it was incredible. Worth the thread bump just to thank JPRaup for the recommendation.

If anyone decides to see it the only negative I found is the acting is a bit rough at the start but once it gets going it becomes a non issue.
