Johnny Depp : Best Role on Film?

I've just started getting into this actors' work (yeah, a little late) and find that that there are so many movies of his from the 1990s that I havent even heard of.

Which of his lesser known flicks would you recommend as a 'must buy' on DVD? And which performances, other than POTC etc would you rate highly?

Donnie Brasco is his best performance (IMO). It is a great mob drama with Pacino, and it isn't glitzy like Goodfellas, it focuses more on the lower-level mob guys and their struggles everyday. It's a great movie, and it seemed to never get its due.

I really liked Blow, What's Eating Gilbert Grape, Edward Scissorhands, Cry-Baby and Ed Wood. All different performances but all great IMO.

I think I've enjoyed most of his movies, except for Sleepy Hollow.

I'm a huge fan of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Blow is excellent, and don't forget about A Nightmare on Elm Street.

The definitive Johnny Depp movie is Jarmusch's Dead Man.

A bunch to choose from, but Ed Wood is the one that really stands out.

He's been very good in everything I've seen him in. It's hard to choose, but I suppose Donnie Brasco stands out, as does The Ninth Gate.

Ed Wood is probably Depp's best performance but he doesn't give the best performance in the film; That title goes to Martin Landau. Landau's performance as Bela Lugosi is scary good.

Depp's second best performance was in Edward Scissorhands; classic.

I gotta go with Donnie Brasco, terrific performance by both him and Al Pacino.

Dead Man is my favorite Depp film, but that's a very passive character. It's a strong performance, but it's subordinate to the film around him. So I wouldn't say it's the best showcase of his range.

Blow started out very good. I'd say the first half of the film was excellent when it showed them getting into/succeeding in the business. The second half falls flat when all he does is remind the audience how much he loves his daughter every minute or so.

Although a very entertaining film, Donnie Brasco is almost a comedy without trying to be. The characters are cartoonish and I highly doubt there is anyone in the mafia that even slightly resembles any of those characters.
