The original was very good but i think this one looks decent as well. At least they didnt make it PG-13. I hope Tony Scott doesn't ruin this with the terrible editing that ruined Man on Fire.
And , yeah, I too thought the milk line was very out of place in the trailer.

Useless Remake? No way....
I loved the original film but with this cast & crew it could easily be better....

It looks good, but the person who cut the trailer should be shot for adding the line about getting the milk.
Washington and Travolta's action movies have normally been pretty good. The stinker from Denzel that I can think of from the last 5 years or so would be Out of Time. For Travolta it would be Basic.
You can't go wrong with Tony Scott as the director as well.

Re: Useless Remake #477: The Taking of Pelham One Two Three
Back in the '70s, things were so bad in NYC we easily swallowed the whole premise of something even worse happening in the subways than what we encountered in our daily rides. It wasn't that big a stretch.
Nowadays, it IS a stretch, but only because no criminal mastermind with half-a-brain would take hostages in a subway. They know they'd never get out 'cause the friggin' train would never move. The transit communications system is so unreliable the hostage-takers could never be sure their demands would ever get adequately received. "[crackle, crackle, crackle]" "What? What did you say?!" And that would go on for hours. And the MTA would just reroute all the other Pelham trains up the Express track and leave the passengers in the hostage train stewing, while a recorded announcement tells them, over and over, "We are being held in the station by the dispatcher. We will be moving shortly." In addition, nobody could drive a car with ransom money at breakneck speed because of the traffic in Manhattan. There are just so many implausibilities here that the movie could never work. And Tony Scott's never been known for believability anyway.
Somehow it worked in 1974, as far-fetched as it was. But I'm a bit more of a stickler now.
I'll stick with giant robots and Tarantino Nazis, things even I can believe in.

Re: Useless Remake #477: The Taking of Pelham One Two Three
Since doing the previous post, I rode the IRT home (including a short, connecting ride on the #6 Pelham line) and had other thoughts on this. For one thing, no MTA employee would ever be so noble as Denzel and take responsibility at any stage of the crisis. Here's how it most likely would go:
The hostage taker (Travolta) reaches the dispatcher and makes his initial demand, getting the response, "I'm sorry but you'll have to talk to the station manager." And the station manager responds, "I'm sorry, but you'll have to talk to the regional supervisor," and she passes him on to the borough coordinator and on to the Vice Pres. of Systems Operations (I'm making up all these titles), prompting Travolta to yell into the mike, "If you don't get my money down here, I'm gonna start shooting passengers now!," prompting this memorable response: "Oh, that's Customer Satisfaction, you'll have to take that up with Public Relations."
Later, when the bureaucrat on the line hears a shot, she insists "If you damage MTA property, you'll incur heavy fines."
Travolta finally reaches Peter Kalikow, the scumbag head of the MTA, who says, "Hostages? Oh, that's a police matter. That goes to Ray Kelly, the Police Commissioner. I'll have my secretary transfer you to One Police Plaza." And the whole thing starts over again with the receptionist there:
"Is this extortion or terrorism? Because if it's terrorism, I'll have to transfer you to Homeland Security."
Travolta eventually gets to Kelly who says, "Ransom? Did you say ransom? That's a budget issue, talk to the Comptroller."
Finally, they get Mayor Bloomberg on the line and he says, "I'm sorry, but it's after hours and the banks are closed. Can I write you a check?"
By this time, Travolta has shot all the passengers or died from exhaustion himself. Oh, and the train hasn't moved an inch in all this time.
That's kind'a how it would really happen.

Re: Useless Remake #477: The Taking of Pelham One Two Three

I liked the trailer. I love, really love, Travolta as a villain, and the trailer makes him look as good as ever. If they can show him dancing in another trailer I'll be there in opening night

I don't care too much about Denzel, but I think Tony Scott can make a good flick of this.

The only reason I'm glad this is coming out is the hope that they'll rerelease the original, either on Blu-ray or in a new DVD version that's anamorphic.

I love the original, but this is going to be a hugely different movie.
Travolta is hit or miss, but Denzel is usually dependable. His remake of Man on Fire was excellent, the remake of The Manchurian Candidate was not.

Saw a screening last night and it was pretty much what I expected. I reached for the Dramamine prior to the movie starting (being a Tony Scott film and all). Travolta does a pretty good job as the villain. It still doesn't compare to the original -- though its attempt to pepper in humor throughout didn't go unnoticed.

This was high on my watch list and I hope to see it this weekend. It's at 42% on Rotten Tomatoes, but that's only for 12 reviews. I hope it does well since we're getting less R-rated thrillers geared towards adults these days.

I want to see it do well because, there are actually a decent number of R-rated movies this summer. If collectively all the r-rated fare does pretty well, maybe we will see more in the future during the summer.
