Finally got to see this movie (via Netflix) and WOW! What an amazing amazing film. It's tough to say it was robbed by the Academy for not getting nominated for Best Picture, Director, etc, because personally I think 2007 was the best year for movies in years. But it's one of the year's very best IMO. Rating 10/10.

This will be nominated for numerous oscars, from what i can tell it will be best picture, adapted screenplay, directing, score, song, actor, supporting actor for Hal Holbrook (guarentee), editing, cinamatography and possible supporting actree for Catherine Keener. I can't wait to pull out this thread in late January/Early February and say told ya so.

10/10

P.S. - heard about a 5 hour cut of the movie, hope that makes it out some day.
As much as I really enjoyed the film, too -- I couldn't resist quoting this one for a chuckle.

I just watched this the other day, and I absolutely loved it. It helped that I could relate to it in many ways - but it was just all around great filmmaking that elevated it to masterpiece status for me.

I too highly praise this movie. I watched it over the weekend and had I seen it during its theatrical run, it would have easily made my list of top films of 2007.

Saw it this past Saturday. I thought it was amazing. Seriously, Emile Hirsch gave an amazing performance. Really outstanding film. I can't wait for a Blu-Ray release.

Watched it again on dvd. Great flick, easily in the top 10 of '07. But I give a slight edge to the book, thanks to Krakauer's personal tidbits that he throws in. Now I gotta grab a copy off ebay and re-read it.

I can't tell you how excited I was to see this movie. I missed it in the theaters but bought it first day.

I hate to say but I was a little dissapointed. It was good but maybe I had it built up in my mind too much before seeing it. It may also not have helped that i finished reading the book 2-3 days before seeing it.

Re: Into the Wild - WHEN???

Finally knocked this one off my to-watch list this evening. It was meticulously crafted and touching, but I don't think it was as inspirational as it wanted to be. I wasn't as drawn in as I would have liked to have been, especially to a story such as this. Good performances though and Penn does continue to show substantial skill behind the camera.

It has almost become a cliche to sing the praises of old veteran actors who show up in supporting roles late in their lives but Hal Holbrook deserves some special praise for his work in this film.

Well he did get virtually universal critical praise, a few critic award nominations, and an Oscar nomination for which he was considered a real possibility for the win.

He got noticed for the excellent work he did.

I really liked this film too like most of you..

2 year bump

Just watched this on Netflix. I thought it was well done. I bit long, but enjoyed it. I honestly didn't know the story behind it so I had no idea what happened to him. I felt sorry for the old man he befriended.

I sure hope this has come to the OP's home by now. He might've had a stroke.

Re: Into the Wild - WHEN???

Saw this for the first time over the weekend. Real good movie and well acted. I wish they spent a little more time on the family and what they were up to while he was gone but I can understand why they didn't.

There have been many times in my life where I've wanted to do exactly what Chris did, minus the whole trying to live in the Alaskan wilderness by myself. The idea of just leaving everything behind and taking a journey through life has always been appealing to me.

Re: Into the Wild - WHEN???

This is a great movie to watch on as big a screen as possible.

How Into The Wild didn't get a Best Picture nomination that year (2007) but Juno did is a complete mystery to me.

This was a well made movie, but I didn't like McCandless. He made a lot of stupid and irrational decisions. I try to avoid people like him at all costs. The "I hate civilization and just want to live off the land" crowd. Morons.

Well, he was young and barely out of college, and most of the people who go through that (like Krakauer who wrote the book did), come out the other side better balanced than those who don't.

This is a great film. I really need to pick up a copy of the Blu-ray at some point. The soundtrack by Eddie Vedder is really good too.

Nice. I like all four of the ones he's directed, but my favorite may always be The Indian Runner. David Morse and Viggo bring it!

Re: Into the Wild - WHEN???

Whatever happened to Sean Penn directing "The Comedian". Written by Jeff Ross and starring Robert De Niro as an aging insult comic. The people attached and small premise alone had me hooked.
