While i'm a fan of both new and old, since there was a list of some great old ones I thought i'd try to come up with a great list of horror that was made within the last 12-15 years.

Juon
Stir of Echoes
Frailty
Bubbahotep

I'd add Session 9 in that list as well.

- Tale of Two Sisters
- Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon
- Chronos

And staying with Del Toro,
Pan's Labyrinth.

I think current horror films lack subtlety. The classics are usually superior. Heck, even early ‘80s horror is preferable to the current stuff. Give me The Demon Seed or the first Friday the 13th any Halloween.

70s - 80s. Surely they made better horror then than in the 90s and later? Or maybe it is because of affection value since I grew up with those movies when most impressionable, around 15 years of age.
I think SALEM'S LOT is probably my favorite. It feels genuine and has a great atmosphere. I never tire of it.
THE FOG is my other favorite. Probably because of affection value. But Carpenter is a master.
FRIGHT NIGHT was another nice one, which borrowed certain elements from Salem's Lot.
I used to think that THE EXORCIST was the scariest. But I don't know anymore. It is a great movie in any case.
I bought THE BROOD, and it probably tops them all in creepiness. I don't even dare to watch it again. Those dwarves are really nightmarish. Sometimes I start the DVD and watch a few scenes, but turn it off before anything scary happens. I just can't handle that movie.
The Hammers with Peter Cushing are great too.
