Don't know what other optical formats you might be thinking about. CED/Selectravision was analog. Didn't have one of those either.

I'll add that VHS tapes from back then were heavier. My family picked up the Indiana Jones releases at McDonald's in 1991(92?) and compared to the original Raiders of the Lost Ark we bought in 1983, they're light as a feather. Raiders weighs a TON. Different quality in the tape, these days? Anyone know more on this?

What I noticed at one point was that the promotional/giveaway tapes were often recorded at the slowest tape-conserving speed so that a 2 hr. video would require only one-third the tape of a retail blank and weigh appropriately light.

I never thought about that; you're probably right. I still maintain the tape used back in the day was heavier though, because well, the tapes we owned from that era just feel heavier.

CD Video (Which is really only available on laserdisc machines, still looking for the promo With or Without You by U2, I have most of the other promos and releases)
