What, no love for "Wicked"' the novel (which I have read) and the musical (which I haven't seen but I get the idea)?

One of the greatest movie-related quotes of all time: Quincy Jones on orchestrating/arranging the score to "The Wiz":

It was like polishing shit.
Please note: This quote is usually falsely ascribed to his work on Michael Jackson's records.

"American McGee's Alice" has been stuck in development limbo for years with Sarah Michelle Gellar attached. I asked her about it a few months ago and she had nothing to say. As far as she's concerned, it's pretty much dead.

With regard to "Oz," not sure if it's already been stated in this thread, but the screenwriter has already said that he's going in his own direction and it's not the McFarlane route. He wants to go semi-dark, but keep it light enough for PG-13.

If they want to go darker than the 1939 film, but not past PG -- why not return to the source material and do a straight adaptation of the original novel?

Actually, if they filmed the Tin Man's origin story that alone would garner an R.

I'd rather see Alice vs. another Oz remake.

Read my first post. I have the book but I haven't read it yet. But from what little I've seen and heard of the musical the story sounds fascinating.

"Wicked" is great, but nothing like these soft-porn McFarlane figures things except that it also takes a different look at the Oz stories. Difference being, one is adult fiction and one is aimed at 14-year-old video gamers.

I think it's a cool idea, but Olson should just adapt McFarlane's story.

That was some deeply twisted shit and would make for an incredibly creepy film.

The Sci-Fi channel has a Mini-Series remake coming out this december called The Tin Man, I think all the chrarcters are human with qualities that tie them together, like the tin man was traped in a giant metal coffin and crap like that

I thought the novel would make a great adult drama, especially with the possibilities of CGI and what with the total reversal of our expectations about the Wicked Witch's and the Wizard's back story.

Unfortunately, now that there is a succesful musical, the tendency would be to adapt the musical based on the novel and not the novel itself. This is sad because, no matter how good it is, the musical is still a somewhat dumbed-down version of the novel and the very idea of a musical would scare a lot of spectators away. Even when a musical is a very great musical to begin with, it often gets watered down in the process of filming (e.g.: "A Little Night Music").

I don't see what Todd McFarlane can bring to this project anyway, except change the title to "The Wizard of Ooze". Shouldn't he be playing with his dolls or something?

Apparently, he can't find the right script.

(Mcfarlanes concept)
In mine, [Dorothy is] up in the Antarctic, and there’s bad weather. The point is that when you’re in bad weather in a shitty place up north, it is completely gray. That would be our ‘black & white [sequence].’ Then she falls into her Shangri-La, called Oz, where suddenly everything’s in color.

There’s still a thing called Toto, except its the biggest thing in the movie and not the smallest thing. [The beast called Toto] basically ate the first dog, and it’s this big thing that [the inhabitants of Oz] ride. They’ve given this generic word… so instead of horses, [people] ride Totos.

The classic was a re-imagining that took a giant dump on Baum's novel by making the whole thing a dream. Victor Fleming raped my childhood!

That McFarlane quote is just ... wow, so many things wrong with it.

If we're going to have a comics pro redo the Wizard of Oz, why not go with Alan Moore's Lost Girls?

I'm looking forward to a movie based on the novel Wicked. I heard that it's going to happen...eventually.

Re: "Wizard Of Oz" remake (Todd Mcfarlane)

Marvel has been putting out comic versions of the original Baum novel that is surprisingly and enjoyably accurate to the books.

I'm very glad that Todd's remake is not going anywhere.

Seriously, fuck that guy.

Re: "Wizard Of Oz" remake (Todd Mcfarlane)

The Scarecrow figurine is pretty cool. But Tin Man looks like a cyborg from the future, and the Lion does not look very Cowardly.

As for the movie, I don't care one way or another.
