Re: A "Perfect" movie

I would venture to suggest and nominate Pulp Fiction as the "perfect movie." Great dialogue (a given, since it's Tarantino), great action, superb acting (the scenes with Travolta and Eric Stoltz after Mrs. Wallace OD's and is brought to his crib are excellent), and it keeps you guessing as it goes from Act I to Act II, and so forth. How all the stories gel together at the end...that was priceless (and I think many films copied that formula with other films). When Travolta and Jackson exit the diner at the end, with that surf song playing in the background...that's magic, folks.

Back to the Future, part II was pretty ingenious, but not perfect.

You're questioning great to excellent movies as being called perfect by someone? Seriously?

I love Tarantino but not all his films are perfect.

2001 and Once Upon a Time In The West are perfect.

Well, it's a perfect movie for me...obviously. So, you won't hear any complaints from me. I just wanted to add the watch scene, the way Sam Jackson is truly menacing and not a caricature like he's become, Ezekiel 25:17, the glowing briefcase, I could go on all day. But it's no My Cousin Vinny, tats for sure.

True. I was just questioning why Spottedfeather is having a hard time with Tarantino movies plus the other ones he mentioned as being perfect. It's not in the realm of impossibility that the movies he mentioned would be called perfect by some. My Cousin Vinny is way more confusing being called perfect than fucking Goodfellas.

Re: A "Perfect" movie

When I think of "perfect" films...I think of Spielberg...Jaws, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and E.T. are films that I just think are "perfect." Do they have technical/thematic flaws - yes - but I think they're three examples of film storytelling at its finest. They're also movies I could never get bored watching.

There's no such thing as a perfect movie, but I would never dream of putting any Tarantino movie, Godfather, or Goodfellas on such a list.

And at least My Cousin Vinny is a little bit entertaining.

Even the best movies have problems and mistakes. What movies do I think are perfect (or close ?)...

E.T.
Goonies
Dennis The Menace
Neverending Story
Toy Story/Toy Story 2 (I completely ignore anything after)
Clash Of The Titans
The Princess Bride
Gulliver's Travels (Ted Danson version)
Star Wars
Psycho
Dracula/Frankenstein
2001
Monty Python's Quest For The Holy Grail
To Kill A Mockingbird
Jerome Bixby's Man From Earth
Braveheart
Rear Window
Maltese Falcon

There are a lot of other movies I could have put on the list, but they tend to be a bit depressing, and I rarely watch depressing things. If you'd like me to go into detail, I could...

Well, how about you list your near perfect movies so we can get an idea?

Re: A "Perfect" movie

I'd like to hear of a mistake in 2001: A Space Odyssey cuz...I can't see a flaw in it. I'm not even talking about in entertainment value. Just as a technical project. Seems like it literally had all bases covered.

To add on...I'm always amazed at seeing that flying pen..and to know how it was done...just makes me smirk. Would've never crossed my mind.

Re: A "Perfect" movie

I was just thinking about The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.

This is the most perfect movie, if you had to die and could view 1 it would be this. Because, there are no special effects here, no complex scifi elements, the characters are just dirt ridden pieces of ragged assholes walking around a desert. You could do a cheap home version of this and come away intact.

Toy Story 3 and LOTR: Return of the King. The latter is not one of my all-time favorites (even though I loved it), but both are pretty much perfectly made from my point of view.

Re: A "Perfect" movie

perfect...

The Talented Mr. Ripley
Rushmore
Brokeback Mountain
Punch-Drunk Love
Taxi Driver
No Country for Old Men
Animal Kingdom
Contagion

some of these may not even be my favorite films, but these are films I felt hit every mark they aimed for, and were cast perfectly. These films and others always hold high replay value for me.

1) Bowman shouldn't have inhaled when getting back into the ship. He should have exhaled. 2) Earth, as seen from space, is incorrect, but that's only because they had no clear photographs of Earth from space at the time. Neither of those diminish the film one iota, it's at the top of my list.

well, the two men shouldn't have spoken where HAL's camera would see them. Sure, they cut the microphones so they couldn't be heard, but these two really smart men didn't think that a computer as sophisticated as HAL couldn't see them ?

Lots of good ones listed.

I'll add "Out of Sight". I can watch that movie anyday, anytime. Soderberg is perfect.

I know that there is no such thing as a perfect movie. I was just responding to how you seemed taken aback that Goodfellas, Godfather, and Tarantino could be anyone's idea of a perfect movie. To you, maybe not but you're really that surprised that someone would think that? Many people sing the praises of those movies and not just critics either.

P.S.-A good portion of those movies you listed are great but Dennis the Menace?
