Well, Mycroft is playing Saruman and Watson Bilbo. Maybe they can get Rachel McAdams as an elf.

Never heard of him but I looked up some clips. Yeah, great voice. Deep and kind of scratchy in a way. I actually think he sounds a lot like Andy Serkis.

Anyway, seems like a nice choice. I'm hoping his voice will be properly manipulated as well to give it a more sinister sound.

Seriously, if you guys haven't seen the recent BBC Sherlock series, you're doing yourself a great disservice. I actually just finished them again tonight, this time with my daughter watching with me.

Benedict Cumberbatch was amazing in that role and I look forward to hearing him as Smaug, way more than the rumored Leonard Nimoy.

Plus it opens up the possibility of a spin-off series in which Smaug and Bilbo travel Middle-earth together solving crimes.

I find it interesting how PJ seems to be casting a bunch of familiar BBC/British acting faces. Holmes and Watson are Smaug and Bilbo, and Bilbo was also at one point Arthur Dent. ;) Smaug will at least sound distinguished.

Are you serious?

I dont know if any have you ever seen Transformers the Movie (the 86 cartoon) but I always loved Unicron and when I read the Hobbit, I pictured that voice. It was done By Orson Wells and when he died, Nimoy had to record some lines... so that woulda been my dream casting.

That said I dig Holmes in the gig. Why isnt Lee playing Sarumon?

He is, I think someone mistyped previously. Stephen Fry (who is playing Mycroft Holmes in the BBC series) is playing Master of Laketown, not Saruman.

Yes. I saw it in the theater and many, many times since. Nimoy voiced Galvatron too. Doesn't mean I was looking forward to him doing Smaug. It would have been fine. Maybe even magical but I'm more excited for Benedict. Serious.

I didn't mistype -- Christopher Lee played Mycroft in The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes.

OK, but you see where the confusion lies, no?

Re: The Hobbit

Yikes! I can finally get back to some postings! We've finished our first block of shooting and moved straight into location scouting. More on that soon... But today, I'm thrilled to announce two new cast members who will be joining us for our second block of shooting.

Evangeline Lilly will be playing a new character—the Woodland Elf, Tauriel. Her name means 'daughter of Mirkwood' and, beyond that, we must leave you guessing! (No, there is no romantic connection to Legolas.) What is not a secret is how talented and compelling an actress Evangeline is; we are thrilled and excited she will be the one to bring our first true Sylvan Elf to life.

I'm also highly excited that Barry Humphries will be portraying the Goblin King, in much the way Andy Serkis created Gollum. Barry is perhaps best known for his business and social connections as the long-time manager of Dame Edna Everage. He has also been an ardent supporter of the rather misunderstood and unfairly maligned Australian politician, Sir Les Patterson. However, in his spare time, Barry is also a fine actor, and we're looking forward to seeing him invest the Goblin King with the delicate sensitivity and emotional depth this character deserves.

Evangeline and Barry, along with Welsh actor Luke Evans as Bard and Benedict Cumberbatch as Smaug, just about rounds out the major casting. I cannot wait to get stuck into these new scenes!

More soon, including a flurry of answers to your questions. Sorry for the delay!

Cheers,
Peter J
Really torn on this Lilly casting and especially that it's an entirely new character to ME. Legolas didn't bug me since Tolkien created him and he easily could have been there for Bilbo's journey. Still, I trust PJ in this. I wonder if they'll make her his sister.

Re: The Hobbit

Only reasoning I can think of behind Evangeline Lily is that she used to get jiggy with the actor who played Merry.

Re: The Hobbit

As for Evangeline Lilly, as the saying goes, "I'd pay to see her read the phonebook," so I'm fine with the casting. As for the part she is going to play, I'll have to wait and see. At first, I was (almost violently) opposed to the Arwen changes in the LOTR films, but I have warmed to them over time.

Why do I sense that this statement was somewhat tongue-in-cheek? ;)

They probably feel the need to keep this from being a total sausage-fest, so it makes sense to add in a female elf. She can take the place of assorted random elves that otherwise add little to the story (like Glorfindel) , and they can show her kicking some ass at the Battle of the Five Armies. Just glad they're not shoehorning Arwen in there.
