re: The Hobbit
By the way, I think I posted in this thread a long while back something about not understanding all the hype about Del Toro because I hadn't seen Pan's Labyrinth and I hated his other movies like Blade and Hellboy.
Well, I finally saw Pan's Labyrinth and it is absolutely amazing. I think Peter Jackson would still most likely be the best choice to do the Hobbit, but if he's not going to do it, just based on the brilliance of Pan's Labyrinth, Del Toro should do an awesome job.
I was completely blown away by Pan's Labyrinth.

Then again, The Hobbit is a different story, set in a different time, so being different might not be that bad of a thing. I just hope the 2 Hobbit films aren't DRASTICALLY different in some way than The Lord of the Rings.
In any event, I'm sure Del Toro will do a great job and I'm looking forward to it.

re: The Hobbit
The main thing that annoys me about Del Toro directing The Hobbit is that fact that because it's taking so frickin' long that it means he's not making all of the other awesome movies that he seemed to be preparing (ex. Frankenstein [from Frank Darabout's script] and Drood).

re: The Hobbit
Del Toro is pretty much the defacto art director on his movies as well- he draws many of the designs of the characters that are used. For example, check out his books Hellboy: The Art of the Movie and Hellboy II: The Art of the Movie.

It is fantastic that these two are working together. I have much higher hopes for this than I did the LOTR.

The Hobbit might be in trouble:

TheOneRing.net has received rock-solid information from an absolutely reliable source that the MGM financial situation is indeed what is behind the delays of the start of “The Hobbit.”
The venerable film studio behind James Bond and about 4,000 other titles is reported to be in about $3.7 billion in debt but holds the distribution rights for two “Hobbit” films that are under contract to be made by Warners Bros. The two studios have an agreement in place to produce and distribute the film but financial difficulties for MGM, including the potential sale of the studio and its holdings, including rights to the films based on the book by J.R.R. Tolkien, has delayed the films.
The source inside the production has told TheOneRing.net that all of the wrangling with MGM is indeed a significant part of possibly pushing the films back.
“At this stage we are all working and hoping for the best case scenario. Without a doubt, the MGM situation carries great importance.”
Conflicting reports list the first of the films’ release in 2011 as well as 2012. Studio and other sources told TORn that 2012 is a foregone conclusion but some involved say there is still hope for 2011.
Peter Jackson told TheOneRing.net in July that the first script was only weeks away from completion and Ian McKellen has talked about reading it since then. (You can read a much more extensive Comic-Con report here
Meanwhile, Variety has reported that Lionsgate dropped out of the bidding for MGM, leaving two bidding entities, with a strong possibility that the approximate 140 debtholders will reject both offers.
It appears the two films will not get funded and a green light from the studios until the MGM financial affairs are settled. Meanwhile the team in New Zealand continues to work on pre-pre-production (or unofficial pre-production) and perhaps the script, although Jackson’s timeline as discussed at Comic-Con indicate that it should be well finished.

Eh, this'd be such a tragedy if it falls thru. That said, I think the likely scenario is that filming is pushed to next yr. Too many things are in place for everyone to just throw in the towel. I just hope Ian stays in good health...

I wonder how Del Toro feels about all this. I mean, he's got a bunch of stuff to do w/ Universal after he's finished doing The Hobbit. This sets him back a lot. Hell....I want some awesome monster/horror flicks from him now!

Agreed. I could care less whether this is made or not, but the longer this takes to come out, the longer it takes for del Toro to do Hellboy III and other movies he's been talking about. I want to see del Toro's take on Frankenstein already!

re: The Hobbit
Guillermo del Toro was attached to direct in February 2008, approaching Neil Gaiman to write the script. After The Hobbit and its follow-up, Del Toro was scheduled to direct four films for Universal; Frankenstein; Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde; a remake of Slaughterhouse-Five; and Drood, an adaptation of a Dan Simmons novel published in February 2009.[11] He still has his sights set on filming At the Mountains of Madness by H. P. Lovecraft, a project on which Lovecraft expert S.T. Joshi would act as consultant. Drood is expected to be his first project after the two films set in Middle-earth. These projects would have filled up his schedule until 2017.[12] Part of the Universal deal entails continuing research and development for the creatures in At the Mountains of Madness.[13] In June 2009, Del Toro said he would only direct Frankenstein and just produce Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.[14] Del Toro is also in the early stages of development of Saturn and the End of Days.[15]

A remake of Slaughterhouse-Five? That's bigger news to me than The Hobbit. Wonder if he's serious about it. The original movie is one of my favorites.

They can skip Drood and go straight to At the Mountains of Madness. Drood was a big pile of shit.
