The Mann-Stewart westerns changed the face of the genre and paved the way for Peckinpah and Leone. Those five films remain fresh, unsentimental and stark, with brave star turns by Stewart playing neither a hero nor a villain. There isn't an ounce of the folksiness that's too often attached to his persona in films like The Far Country and The Naked Spur. It's not even a close contest between these two, in my mind.

Another fine Stewart western is Broken Arrow, which humanized the Native American better than any other film of the 1950s. It's almost like a shortened, western version of Lawrence of Arabia.
