Johnny Depp Peeks Into 'Dark Shadows'

Will Depp play Barnabas Collins? We don't know.

July 27, 2007

Warner Bros. is moving forward on a big screen version of the vampire soap "Dark Shadows" with the help of Johnny Depp.

According to Variety, Depp's Infinitum-Nihil production shingle and Graham King's GK Films banner are looking to adapt the popular Dan Curtis-crafted drama, though the trade offers no word on whether or not Depp would also star.

The story does, however, mention some past interview in which Depp said that as a kid he'd always wanted to be Barnabas Collins, the show's central vampire patriarch.

"Dark Shadows" aired weekdays on ABC from 1966 to 1971 with Jonathan Frid as the original Barnabas Collins. More than 1,225 episodes were produced over the years and the show has been subject to repeated attempted revivals, most recently with a 2004 WB pilot featuring Martin Donovan and Alec Newman.

Curtis died last year of a brain tumor and the various companies reached a rights deal with his estate. David Kennedy of Dan Curtis Prods. would be a producer on the "Dark Shadows" revamp.

Depp, the star of this summer's "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End," will next be seen in Tim Burton's "Sweeney Todd." She's (sp??) circling a number of upcoming projects including Mira Nair's adaptation of "Shantaram" and a biopic of the late former KGB agent Alexander Litvinenko.

I would love to see Johnny Depp play Barnabas Collins. Also, I am really looking forward to seeing Depp in Shantaram. The book was fantastic.

I love how the headline tries to get a "scoop" but really reveals nothing.

Not a bad choice. Maybe this will actually happen this time.

I'm starting to worry that Johnny dearest is turning into another Striesand--He was more fun to watch *before* he started building his own starring vehicles.

Yeah, there's really no news here. Although, it's nice to hear that Depp won't be Freddie Mercury, at least not in the immediate future.

Don't tell me he was going to star in a biography of Freddie Mercury was he?

I just hope they don't remake the exact same plot again. It's been done in the original series, the 1970 movie, the 1991 NBC series, and even the unaired 2004 WB pilot.

Obviously they've got to get barnabas out of the coffin after 200 years, but they don't have to do it EXACTLY the same way!
