i wonder if the 70 or so people who indicated they were getting TMS in DVDTalk has seen this thread (or perhaps many couldn't find it in stores). i am actually holding back my vote until i see TMS again.

I love both in their own ways.
The Goonies production was obviously much more polished all the way around, but The Monster Squad certainly radiates nostalgia towards the Horror genre / Universal monster films better than any other film I can think of. Both productions obviously had a lot of heart at the center of them, something lacking in most films today. Monster House is the only recent title I can recall that is similiar but it's still animated and lacking the more adultish themes.
The only other 1980s "group of kids doing something crazy" movie that I can think of to compare to these films is Explorers, which I would rank the best of all three up until the last 15 minutes of the movie, which is a 'love it/hate it' situation.

Monsster squad is a good movie but it has nothing on the goonies. The goonies live inside me but the monster squad is forgettable. The only thing I recall about the monster squad was the virgin joke and the conversation on how to kill a werewolf.

i just saw TMS and think it holds up very well, but i too will have to go with TG. it was better made, better acted, and more dramatic when it needed to be, but Phoebe and the Frank moment at the end still gets me.
has anyone else noticed the unbelievably weird coincidence these two movies have? i'll keep mum for now and let someone guess, but it was so weird...

Somehow lived my 40 years without seeing either until this last month or so.
I thoroughly enjoyed both, but think that The Goonies is very overrated. Monster Squad gets my vote.

I vote Goonies tho I really enjoyed The Monster Squad. Of course, I kind of rank TMS along with Little Monsters, which I also enjoyed.
