Its very enjoyable to see so many bad obscenely costly films bomb when so many good films have bombed recently...
Hopefully, Die hard and and Ratatouille will bomb as well.
Btw, Could the p.o.s. called FF2 have one of the biggest 2nd weekend drops ever? ITs gotta be close to the Hulks 2nd weekend.

I'm hoping Die Hard tanks on the PG-13 rating alone, but I'm keeping close tabs on Ratatouille. Brad Bird is a genius and The Incredibles was amazing, but Cars put a bad taste in my mouth and (IMO) was Pixar's first failure in terms of storytelling.

There are films out there currently that I wish could make loads more than they're currently making (Knocked Up, Ocean's Thirteen, and Surf's Up to name a few), and yes, I believe there are a few that should be making significantly less than what they're currently raking in (Shrek, Pirates, and Fantastic Four).

It's smarter and more in-tune than most family films that have come out recently, but there are still execution problems that I'm over to overlook due to the nature of the film.
I've seen all the trailers for Surf's Up and haven't been swayed. It doesn't help that I thought Open Season was the worst animated film i've ever seen and didn't bother finishing, so practically anything would have to be better. Of course, i'm aware of your hatred for DreakWorks animated films, which I actually enjoy (Shrek movies, Over the Hedge, Flushed Away). If anything, it'll be a rental however the aspect of surfing penguins does nothing for me, especially the characters i've seen in the trailers.

Which costly films bombed, aside from Evan Almighty? The big ones have been successful, albeit probably lower then expectations.

Glad to see Evan Almighty turn out to be a mighty bomb. I put this film in the Larry the Cable Guy class of films, ie, films I wish nothing but failure upon.

I expected a big drop for FF. It's had its weekend in the sun. It is, however, a lot of fun and it's a shame it dropped.

Evan Almighty was doomed to failure the moment Universal decided to spend a dime over $20 million, which this film easily could have been.

Talk about bad films making too much money, it makes me sad to see Ocean's Thirteen skirting anywhere near $100 million domestically.

And Ratatouille is going to be so huge, it's not even funny. It will last much longer than any of these other summer movies.

Transformers will open huge, and have I'd say 3 or 4 really good weeks. Don't know about its legs yet.

I actually gave my money to Evan Almighty even though I saw A Mighty Heart. Some box office workers need to refine their listening skills.

Just got back from Fantastic Four, and after a weak first 10 minutes or so it was, well - FANTASTIC!

TONS of fun - just like a summertime comic book movie should be! A GREAT family movie! (And MUCH better than the first, which was OK.)

i think fantastic four came pretty close to a pg13, its no where a G

so you want die hard to flop because its pg13? those movies werent very "R" to begin with, it might not have alot of swearing but it will have fuck at least once, the violence should be at the same level

I laughed nonstop thru Surf's Up - I thought it was a lot of fun and I wish it was doing better at the box office. It might not be the best film for the kids, because they're less likely to pick up on the subtle humor and might not "get it".

Mathew why would you want Ocean's 13 to do better? Isn't that exhibit A for uninspired, big budget, average sequels?

Please, let's not turn this thread into a variant of the "Live Free or Die Hard" thread already in progress...

Of those in the top ten, there are precious few which I would consider as genuinely "good."

Evan Almighty: D
1408: B-
Fantastic Four: C-
Ocean's 13: B
Knocked Up: A-
Surf's Up: B
Pirates of the Caribbean: D+
Shrek: D

I would only recommend seeing anything in the realm of a "B." Anything else is a waste of money, and, more importantly, time.

I personally thought Ocean's Thirteen was breezy fun. Just shameless entertainment and charisma, which is all I'd hoped for. I'm not going to debate ratings again here, maybe it's because I'm from Canada that I thought FF2 could have been G, our rating system is very lax.

And Chmiel, I thought Cars was easily the first big Pixar failure and I thought Ratatouille was excellent, so hopefully Brad Bird will deliver for you...I know he did for me. I'm expecting it and Transformers to be the biggest hits of the summer, so I'm really looking forward to the next few weeks box office numbers to see how both of these flicks fare.

Good grief. Give it a rest already.

It's PG-13. Deal with it.

Most of the folks who loved the first one will take their kids/teens with them to see it and I expect it to do well.

The rating doesn't matter to me, but I don't think it will matter.

I echo what invisiblegt said:

I've got a free ticket to see EA that I will use next week. I didn't like Bruce Almighty, so I'm not expecting much from Evan either. I like Carrell, but I think it's too early to bank a movie on his personality alone.

Exactly. Ocean's Thirteen was just as entertaining and enjoyable like the first two. Shameless fun that my friends and I all had a blast with. We're seeing again at the Drive-In on Tuesday with 1408 (two movies for four dollars, a deal that cannot be beat).

I'm hoping Ratatouille will be great. Bird has me won over for at least three or four more movies due to just The Iron Giant alone.

[Then again, what do I know, I got dirty looks from friends of mine when I said Sky High and Curious George were two of the most underrated family films of the past decade.]

I was mostly talking about the failures and underperformances of Evan Almighty, Fantastic Four 2 (which looks to be having a terrible 2nd weekend although I admit it had a very good 1st weekend), Surf's Up, Nancy Drew (And these are just the PG rated failures!) + D.O.A. (which nobody thought would make any $)
I usually enjoy sequels but i really think that audiences must be burned out for the time being on sequels or something. That or there are just too many movies coming out and people are too busy to see everything?

After watching it tonight, I didn't really think so. I can't think of much difference between this one and the previous that would warrent a PG-13 to PG rating, let alone thinking it would be a G. Hell, a dude got shattered in half!

That's such an ignorant statement, it's not even worth a response.

I'm sure the Weinsteins are thrilled with the likely $20 million opening of 1408. They need a hit.

Could Evan Almighty end up being the biggest bomb ever? I would expect a huge dropoff next week. And it cost over $200 million. So could it?

Evan might have some legs like Wild Hogs but with all these movies coming out like transformers harry potter etc, its gonna have a hard time. Same thing with Fantastic four. Wish it did better. that was a great flick.
