I didn't read most of that review, and I don't recommend others do, since it's extremely rife with spoilers. I just scanned it to get the gist of what Harry was saying. It sounds really good but Knowles has a tendency to have hyperbole-overload in his gushing reviews, so I take his words with a grain of salt usually.

Here's another positive review to give a better indicator on the quality of the film (warning: many spoilers):

I agree about Harry Knowles. It's not just that he spews hyperbole in his reviews, but he doesn't seem to dislike many films. I think he's so happy to get out of the house that a positive review from him is almost guaranteed.
In any case, I had no doubt that PTA would pull it off again.

I was in the audience with the AICN and Cinematical folks during this screening the other night. I really enjoyed the movie, although DDL's character reminded me an awful lot of Bill "The Butcher" from Gangs of New York (without all the butchering). IMO this is PTA's most accessible film, and I agree with all this early Oscar talk.
For those interested, here's a link to some of the other ratings from those in attendance (I gave it 4/5 stars). You'll see that most of the negative comments were not about the film, but about Tim League's decision to make this the closing night film for Fantastic Fest, a genre film festival. This was advertised as a "secret screening", and I imagine that a lot of folks were anticipating something more along the lines of an early look at Beowulf or 30 Days of Night to close out the weeklong event.

I've been excited for this one since early-mid-2006 when I came across the title while checking out Anderson's resume on IMDB. It was originally slated for a May 2007 release, so I was disappointed when it was pushed back. But exciting to know it's almost here.

Which movie nowadays really sticks close to the source material?

But as for TWBB, I cant remember the last time I heard such overwhelmingly positive reviews for a film. I mean it sounds like we could be talking about one of the best movies ever made from the way the poeple are talking...It certainly looks great.

Yeah, the trailer got me interested. I'm ambivalent about Anderson's stuff, but Daniel Day Lewis' performance looks interesting.
One thing that had me confused... in New City's Winter film preview, they called it a "porno version of Erich Von Stroheim's Greed." Now, that just could have been a snarky comment, but I don't immediately sense the parallels that comment implies.
Most likely, I'm reading too much into it...
