Me thinks that's what started this thread. I honestly don't see the hoopla over it. For some reason in these parts if a movie is not rated R/PG-13 and/or at least 95 to 110 minutes it is not going to be worth seeing.

If Die Hard 4 gets a PG-13, I just went from definitely seeing it to waiting on positive feedback.

Um, the 'directors cut' of Alien that was released in theaters briefly was rerated R! So no,the film won't get a PG-13 at all today as evidenced by that.

Here is the rating reason for that version of the film..
Rated R for sci-fi violence/gore and language.

And I can't believe people think that if they took out the swearing in the first Die Hard and left everything else intact,it would get a PG-13???

What world are you guys living in? You claim you've seen worst on The Sheild or something. Those are tv,and even in their attempts at being 'gritty', are still not as strong and graphic as Die Hard.

The violence in Die Hard is Hard R rated violence all the way. It gets edited to hell when aired on network tv. You have gritty strong brutal bullet ridden violence, with blood splattering. Excessive beat downs with alot of blood and bruising. Tons of bodily harm in graphic fashion, like pulling shards of glass out of your foot while splashing blood all over the place and being in a ton of pain. This is not PG-13 violence at all and never will be!

Stakeout - rated R
Another Stakeout - rated PG-13

If we're including the film immediately preceding it in the series and not the original:

Star Trek: First Contact - rated PG-13
Star Trek: Erection - rated PG

I hate that studios feel the need to do this. It'd be one thing if the sequels actually just so happened to get those ratings. But they aim for those ratings because they want the films to be accessible to the largest possible audience. This completely ignores the fact that not every movie rated PG-13 is automatically going to appeal to everyone who is allowed to see that film.

Nowadays, I'd prefer a movie be rated R just because it ensures a slightly more mature crowd at the theaters, which means I can actually watch the movie and enjoy the experience.

This was brought up in the Fantastic Four 2 thread due to it being PG. Some others that i mentioned were...

Robocop 3 - R for 1 and 2, Pg-13 for 3
Dr. Dolittle 2 - PG-13 for 1 and PG for 2
Police Academy - R for 1 and PG for the rest

none of which improved or even stayed the same
TBH, I can't name one.

Romero held out as long as he could:

NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD -unrated (might have gotten an X?)
DAWN OF THE DEAD -unrated (definitely would have gotten an X)
DAY OF THE DEAD -unrated (definitely would have gotten an X)
LAND OF THE DEAD -R

I dont understand how DH4 can be PG13 w/ the MF line in it unless they cut it out even though they show it in the trailers. THat has to be in there or it wont be a DH film. If it gets cut, Unrated for sure on DVD.

The chestburster scene alone guarantees the film an "R" rating. Compare it to the PG-13 chestburster scenes in AvP and you'll see.

Evil Dead: NC-17(from original X)
Evil Dead 2: R (from original X)
Army of Darkness: R
Actually "The Evil Dead" and "Evil Dead 2" are unrated. They were both given the "X" rating initially but they've never subsequently been given ratings such as R or NC-17 as you suggest, they remain unrated to this day. They did tone down "Evil Dead 2" in an attempt to get an "R" rating though but they didn't get it.

They could pull a Superman Returns and when they get to the most famous line they could change it to, "Yippee-ki-yay and all that".

I thought you could still get a PG-13 with one f-bomb (so long as other areas don't put it into the R category). 16 Blocks (also starring Willis) had an f-bomb (2 if you count that it was said again in a recording) and that had some violence.

I guess it all depends on how they edit the film with the violence. If they do a good job, they could still get away with it.

They could say it twice. That was one of the points made in "This Film is Not Yet Rated". You can say a non-sexual F-bomb twice and get a PG-13. So the line will probably stay in. Three times though, R. Totally, ludicrously silly, but there it is.

Actually, they were rated by the MPAA eventually, Evil Dead 1 in 1994, and yes Evil Dead 2 did get an R rating when it was cut.
From MPAA.org:

Title: Evil Dead (1994)
Rating: NC-17
Rating Reason: Rated NC-17 for substantial graphic horror violence and gore.
Distributor: Mca Home Entertainment

Title: Evil Dead II (1988)
Rating: R
Distributor: Rosebud Releasing Corp.
Other: Edited for re-rating
Previously rated (X) in (1988).

The 'unrated' you are seeing is on your dvds, which don't need MPAA ratings.

Actually I've heard it used 3 times before in a PG-13 movie. The American President has 3 uses of the F-word. Maybe the MPAA looked the other way on that film for political reasons.

The PG-13 rating was created because of ToD (and Gremlins).
