Which comedy directors show the kind of vision you are talking about? The guy primarily does dick and fart jokes but his films have more heart than 90% of comedies out there.

Well, I'm interested in checking out both movies.

But I'm a Kevin Smith fanboy, so it's expected.

Just a small update. Rosario's out due to filming schedules. Jason Bateman was rumored for the lead, but that's all it was. Kev wrote the character Zack for a particular actor who still remains anonymous according to his recent blog update.

Even though he isn't a contender for this flick, bringing Bateman into the Smith universe would be a perfect marriage. I'd love to see them work together.

Red State has gotten some positive responses from those that have read it, including Harvey Weinstein. I think he is all but done with that script.

As much as I like Kevin Smith the guy talks about sucking dick and sodomy a little too much. It's getting old. Even in his podcast he can't go 5 min without a sucking dick joke. Is he in the closet? Time will tell. I'd say Jen is his beard for sure if they didn't have a kid. Maybe he was straight before though. Sleeping with Jen would turn me gay.

I'm in for anything Kevin comes up with. I'm going to be there for this and "Red State."

There are two spots already waiting for these DVDs in my cabinet.

This is why Harvey Weinstein doesn't even need to read a script from the guy to greenlight his movies. He's almost like an Indie Speilberg. "you want to do a movie? Sure. How much do you need to get it done? Here's a check."

Is there a problem with that? I think the fact that Kevin gets to make the films he wants to make and has almost complete creative control is pretty cool.

Actually word just came out that the Weinstein's read a draft of Kevin's upcoming horror film "Red State" and they decided to pass. They don't want it.

It's outside KS's comfort (i.e. comedy) zone and won't draw the same crowd that is so bankable with Smith films. It's a riskier move.

I'm sure Lions Gate will have no problem picking up Red State.

From Silentbobspeaks.com:

"It’s the first time Harvey and Bob have passed on anything I’ve wanted to do, but if they were gonna pass on anything, this’d be the one to do it on. The only explanation Michael gives me is “Harvey thought it was more of a Bob flick and then Bob didn’t get it.

Naturally, this makes me wanna make “RED STATE” even more than I did just prior to that phone call. I get excited thinking about having to raise financing for our hot potato of a flick. This represents a turning point of sorts for Scott and I, inasmuch as everything (with the exception of “MALLRATS”) has been made with the Weinsteins. It might be nice to see if we can get something done without them. Whether it’ll be nice or not, however, it’s what’s in the cards, as they don’t feel the flick is very commercial. And, in truth, on the surface, it may not be - unless we get the buzz I think we’ll get off the festival circuit. Regardless, it’s not something we’ll have to think about ’til after we’re done with “ZACK AND MIRI MAKE A PORNO.”

Watch for more updates as they come in, but I'd still put this one out of your mind for now.

RED STATE is a horror film in which a group of misfits encounter fundamentalism gone to the extreme in Middle America.

True. I doubt they want to be stuck with another "Jersey Girl," which was Kevin's attempt at a chick flick.

But a horror film seems much more in line with Kevin Smith's juvenile interests; it's much closer to his sex and drugs humor than trying to make a romantic comedy about a single father.

Agreed. I love Smith and have all his movies on DVD (yep, I double dip too) but I am not a fan of horror movies and have no interest in this one. Although I think the title is very clever for whatever that's worth.

I honestly believe it was a stupid move on The Weinstein's part to not take the risk on Red State. Smith has stated in numerous interviews that he wanted to do it on a budget of $5 million or less. The Weinsteins would've made a profit just on international sales alone.

Kevin Smith & Co. make ‘Porno’

It’s a comedy threesome.

Seth Rogen of Knocked Up, Elizabeth Banks of The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Clerks filmmaker Kevin Smith have joined forces for a comedy about two friends who decide to cure their financial ills by making an X-rated video.

Zack & Miri Make a Porno begins shooting in January in Pittsburgh. “It sounds deceptively straightforward with the title, but it’s a little more complicated than that,” says Smith, who acknowledges the topic is an eyebrow-raiser.

The writer/director is famous for pushing the limits of taste in comedies that also are tempered with touching moments, such as Chasing Amy, Dogma and Clerks II. In Zack & Miri, however, the touching moments may also be moments of touching.

“Everything I’ve done, on the surface, seems off-putting to some audience or other, but if you sit down and watch the flicks, you’ll see they’re sweet-natured and not angry or hateful or provocative for the sake of being provocative,” Smith says.

The story is about two platonic friends who discover feelings for each other while trying to earn some cash. The awkwardness of the circumstance and the characters’ unsexiness fuel the jokes.

“It’s very much a love story,” Smith says. “Zack and Miri just want to make a good old-fashioned dirty movie.”

Seth Rogan? Wow. Two actors from Apatow's camp, that's a coup, and actually seems like a good fit.

I agree!

Although, I am sad that he is filming in Pittsburgh instead of filming in Minnesota.

The inclusion of Rogen just made me want to see this. And Banks is such a piece of ass I'd watch anything with her and "porno" in the title. Nice to see Rogen branch out of his Apatow comfort-zone. I hope the results are just as typically hilarious.

Only iffy thing is that knowing that both are big on improv, and from what i've heard from the q&a dvd's, he's not a fan of it (he mentions that its insulting to the writer by going off the script.)

Oh, that Kevin. Such a tease. Banks & Rogen are no secret, but so far he's been tight-lipped on the rest of the cast.

Since the announcement of the supporting cast in the trades won't be 'til probably Wednesday, and people wanna know now, I figured I'd give ya'll something to discuss 'til then.

Here's a glimpse of the supporting cast...

Who can they be?
I'm pretty sure 4 is Jeff Anderson and 5 is Jason Mewes...

someone over there already pointed out Craig Robinson as 2, citing a photo.
