Selleck IS Magnum. Period. Nobody else can come close. When everyone knows you as a certain character it's just not possible to have someone else step in and do the job right, typically. Magnum worked for what it was, when it was. A film version now would only cheapen it.

I always thought Clancy did get to write a script before the project was cancelled. Did he at least get around to penning a treatment? That would probably be a facinating read.

I'm sad they don't want to do a Magnum film with Selleck as the lead. Having him as a mere cameo is a waste.

"Nicolas Cage is being rumored to star in the big screen version of hit 80s TV show "Magnum, P.I." Cage is said to be seriously considering the offer after being impressed by the script, which has an even balance of comedy and crime-solving..."

Any word as to why they don't just use Tom Clancy's treatment, rehire the series cast, and make a movie that actually concludes the series?

I never really watched Magnum that much, so I'm not as emotionally vested in it as some, and I think Matthew Mc would do okay. Definitely not Nic Cage.
