Robin Hood -- Ridley Scott

Ridley Scott to Direct Nottingham
Source: Variety April 30, 2007
Ridley Scott is set to direct Russell Crowe in the Universal Pictures drama Nottingham, which Brian Grazer is producing for Imagine Entertainment, reports Variety.
Universal earlier bought the spec script by Ethan Reiff and Cyrus Voris, creators of the Showtime series "Sleeper Cell." Crowe was attached at that time.
Crowe stars as the Sheriff of Nottingham in a revisionist take on the Robin Hood tale, with Nottingham as a noble and brave lawman who labors for a corrupt king and engages in a love triangle with Maid Marion and Robin Hood.
Production will start next year.
Scott will direct the film after he helms Leonardo DiCaprio this fall in a CIA thriller for Warner Bros., based on the David Ignatius novel "Body of Lies." William Monahan is writing that script and Scott is producing with Donald De Line.
Scott has directed Crowe in Gladiator, A Good Year and the upcoming American Gangster.

Too bad the rest of the movie sucked.
Well OK, except Michael Kamen's score.

Helgeland new sheriff of 'Nottingham'
By Borys Kit
June 5, 2007
Brian Helgeland has been brought on board to rewrite "Nottingham," Universal Pictures' revisionist take on the legend of Robin Hood. Russell Crowe is starring, Ridley Scott is directing and Imagine Entertainment's Brian Grazer is producing.
Crowe stars as the Sheriff of Nottingham in a scenario that sees him more noble lawman than an evil king's right-hand man and facing off with a more shadier Robin Hood in the Sherwood Forest.
Universal picked up "Nottingham" from Ethan Reiff and Cyrus Voris, creators of Showtime's "Sleeper Cell," in a massive bidding war in the winter, paying a handsome seven figures (HR 2/1).
The studio is hoping to being production early next year.
Dylan Clark is overseeing for the studio. Karen Kahela-Sherwood and Jim Whitaker oversee for Imagine.
Helgeland was nominated for a best adapted screenplay Oscar for writing 2004's "Mystic River" and won one for "L.A. Confidential," which he wrote with Curtis Hanson. Helgeland also is a director, whose credits include "Payback" and "A Knight's Tale."
He is repped by Endeavor.

By the way in the 1938 Flynn movie, even though i love it, something i found off is how the Sheriff of Nottingham in this film is a type of bumbling comical relief while Sir Guy of Gisbourne (played by Basil Rathbone) commands everything. In the legends, Guy of Gisbourne was a wandering swordsman itching to duel with Robin Hood, kind of an equal to the green hero, while the Sheriff was doing all the commanding right-hand presence for Prince John (think of the Sheriff as Darth Vader, and Sir Guy would be Boba Fett in this allusion) which of course Sir Guy was made to be in place! But for cinematic purposes the Sheriff was made just a comic side-kick to Sir Guy --still in the greatest adventure film ever made.

Hmmm...I don't know about this, but points for thinking outside the box. From MTV:
How do you find an actor of Russell Crowe’s caliber to play against him? Well, Ridley Scott seems to have found the answer: let the Oscar winner play both roles! That’s right, in one of the odder casting ideas in at least a few days (it just so happens this news comes in the same week Johnny Depp signed on to play Tonto), Crowe is going to play both the sheriff of Nottingham and Robin Hood himself in Ridley Scott’s upcoming flick, “Nottingham.”
The news comes straight from the helmer himself, with Scott revealing “He’s playing both!” exclusively to MTV News during an interview for his new film “Body of Lies,” which co-stars Crowe. While Scott held additional details close to his chest — saying they would take too long to describe — he did exclaim that Crowe’s dual roles would be “a good old clever adjustment of characters. One becomes the other. It changes.”

While I never bothered or have any interest with A Good Year, I thought American Gangster was solid and critically it was well received as well. I'll wait to hear reviews for Body of Lies, but DiCaprio along with Crowe/Scott have me pretty intrigued. Doesn't seem that bad of a combination to me!

Why stop there? I say go the Eddie Murphy route and have him play all the characters in the movie.

Sienna Miller is out:
"Miller Quits Nottingham
10 January 2009 6:12 AM, PST
British actress Sienna Miller has quit upcoming movie Nottingham amid rumours of a rift with co-star Russell Crowe.
The pair was due to star in the new Ridley Scott-directed picture, which tells the story of mythical English outlaw Robin Hood.
Crowe is to tackle the title role, and that of the villainous Sheriff of Nottingham, while Miller was due to play love interest, Maid Marian.
But the Alfie star has now dropped out of the picture, which is due to begin filming in England in March, amid growing speculation about tension between Crowe and the rest of the team.
A source tells New York Post gossip column PageSix, "Originally the movie was about a love triangle between Maid Marian, Robin Hood and the Sheriff of Nottingham. It is now all about Russell's Robin Hood. Literally, 40 pages of script were redone and now are just devoted to him and his massive ego. It's amazing."
A representative for Miller confirmed she has quit the picture, insisting the actress is "fine and about to sign on to two other movies."
And a spokesperson for the movie denied "these rumours" of tensions amongst the cast, saying, "Nottingham is moving ahead with Russell Crowe and Ridley Scott." "
I think I speak for everyone when I say no great loss.

A Good Year was a solid picture. It's just different from the typical Scott/Crowe fare. Have yet to see American Gangster or Body of Lies.
