Damn, "Next" bombed. "The Invisible" actually did ok. Just looking at the commercials, I doubt that it cost more than 10-15 million to make. The lead actor is a guy i've only seen in 1 other film (War of the Worlds).

So Disturbia has to be a bona-fide surprise hit, right?

The Condemed - ouch. It looks bad though. I'm curious about The Invisble but haven't seen any reviews.

No kidding. This weekend would be a good time to see a movie if you like small crowds. Next weekend will be insane... but at least other movies will profit when Spidey showings sell out.

Which is reason number one I don't want to see this film. Both he and Fanning were insufferable in "WOTW". And the commercial for "The Invisible" looked like every other supernatural thriller from the past few years.

8. The Condemned (Lionsgate) - $3.5 million [$3.5 million cume]
Yikes, how many theaters does this represent? I know the budget wasn't that high, so it will easily make money back eventually, but I had no idea it would score so low. Did The Marine even do better than this? Looks like this movie is about 8 years too late.

"The Marine" did 18 million in the theaters. But did much better on DVD. 30M (and counting) in rentals.

They should have made The Condemned (or any Steve Austin movie) back in 2000 when he was on leave for injuries. He's not nearly as popular now as he was circa 98-01 when he probably would have actually opened a movie in the 20 million range. The Rock's films were opening similarly back then so I have to use that to get my estimate.

I honestly don't know what WWE will do next for an in-house film. Cena and Austin are the most marketable stars they have left, but neither have the charisma of the Rock to actually pull off full-time acting. I don't think I can see HHH or Undertaker playing a starring role.

They've still got the acting powerhouse that is Kane!

Hot Fuzz beat that estimate by a cool million. ($1.5m on Friday, $2.02 on Saturday with at least a mill on Sunday). The platform release will work in its favor. (It looks to be down by about 15% this weekend).

Somewhere between 130-140 wouldn't surprise me. The advance sells are insane on tickets. Tis will be huge.

I always wondered why people wait for days, even months (e.g. Star Wars) and rush too see a movie opening weekend. Once the movie is released its out forever. I always wait a couple of weeks then see it once all the craziness dies down. I finally saw Matrix Revolutions this weekend.

Sometimes the craziness is all part of the experience that makes it fun. I remember how much of a blast The Phantom Menace was during the midnight showing and how it wasn't until viewing it later on DVD that I noticed how weak of a movie it really was.

Wow those Fantasy Mogul numbers ended up being pretty close to what the actual weekend estimates were.

Because it is a lot of fun to be with other like-minded and/or rabid fans.

And the longer you wait to see a movie, the more likely it is to be moved to the smaller theaters, especially with the short theatrical windows now.

Spidey has 2 weeks to rake in the cash. Then Shrek (5/18) and Jack Sparrow (5/25) show up. May could have 3 of the top grossers of the year. Last year had 2 of the top 5 (X3 and DaVinci Code). But all 3 of these films should gross over $300 million each.
