I'm all for that as long as Todd Haynes is directing them.

Too bad about Grindhouse. I was hoping for a sequel featuring Machete and Thanksgiving.

Get ready for "Are We Dead Yet?", a comic romp through the ghetto in which Ice Cube awakes from a dream and remembers he's a black man.

Well Machete has been announced as a staight to video release. So you'll get half your hope at least.

Big ouch for Grindhouse losing 20% on Saturday. Looking at the ads, I don't think they did a particularly great job advertising the movie. I know it was supposed to be old school advertising but not captializing on the actors was a bit of a mistake. IMO, they should have advertised the movies separately and as full fledged movies (They advertised Death Proof on its own, but didn't mention Tarantino, Kurt, or whore it out like they usually do (From the Director of...)).

Never did see a trailer in theaters, and it just seems they didn't sell the concept particularly well. So much for sequels and the trailers becoming movies, unless it either a) holds steady through the rest of April or b) does gangbusters on video. Cuz now the Weinsteins have all the justification they need to keep runtimes down.

You think maybe what happened was all the teens bought a ticket to see Ice Cube's movie and then snuck in to see GRINDHOUSE? And that's why Cube's movie is doing good buisness and GRINDHOUSE is not.

Its nice to see 300 hanging in there.
I never thought Wild Hogs would do $150 +. It is definately one of the surprise hits of the year.
I figured Grindhouse would bomb. I just don't think it was marketed very well. Tarantino movies always do great on dvd though.

Pretty much every movie has a month to bring in as much cash as possible because May brings us the big 3 and every other movie will be an afterthought in the eyes of most.

He is getting paid. How the hell is he not a black man anymore? He just makes kid movies not just like Eddie Murphy.

Yeah, i'm not sure what this quote is supposed to mean! Should he be making films about gangs or playing parts where he's a rapper?

I mean he's black! Of course he should be!

Grindhouse's budget is reported at around $53m, not $100m like some magazine/reports were making it out to be prior to release.

Grindhouse did not cost 100 million, where is that number coming from? Here is a snippet of an article on the Box Office with quotes from Harvey Weinstein:

=================
Harvey Weinstein said disappointing returns for "Grindhouse" resulted from the "novelty in America of releasing a double bill and asking an audience to make a three-hour commitment."

"Grindhouse" played to big crowds on the East and West coasts but failed to click with audiences in the Midwest and South, Weinstein said.

With theatrical receipts, overseas sales, television and home-video revenues, "Grindhouse" will turn a profit on its $53 million budget, Weinstein said. The company hoped that word of mouth from those who did see it would sustain it at theaters in coming weeks, he said.

"If you go see it with any audience, walk into any theater, you'll see people screaming and applauding like a rock concert," Weinstein said. "Maybe we didn't educate the audience that it's such an experience."

I tend to think it wasn't advertised properly myself. And it is true, the movie got a great response both times I saw it, with lots of laughing (Planet Terror) and clapping (the revenge sequence in Death Proof).

Even though I liked GRINDHOUSE, I'm kinda pleased to see it tank at the boxoffice. The last thing RR and QT need is to have their massive egos inflated by more success and have more talk show hosts gushing over them while they have movie set flings with bimbo actresses. I was getting sick of seeing them on TV all through the week getting fellatioed by the likes of Leno and Kimmel. I would hate to see RR and QT get fat and lazy and start churning out self indulgent crap because they've become convinced that they can do no wrong.

A little failure is good. It'll knock them off their pedestals and make them work even harder on their next projects because they now have something to prove.

Plus I hate the Weinsteins, so it's all good.

I'm really not surprised. Grindhouse is a hard sell since its a pretty serious and non-spoofy take on cinema most people avoid. Plus being Easter weekend, long running time with fewer screenings, pretty much what I expected.

Yes, some reports double that figure of $53 million to over $100 million...
I wasn't even talking about that though...
You have to take into account film print costs. You have to take into account the fees of both tarantino and rodriguez and EVEN if that is included in the total cost the film has had a huge promotional campaign that without a doubt was at least $40 million...You have to take into account newspaper ads.
The amount of TV and magazine ads for the film definitely take up much of that cost and you also have to take into account all of the costs of traveling for the hundreds of promotional interviews the cast and directors have done on talk shows, entertainment shows, etc...
So, I would say it is certainly a safe bet to say this film cost well over $100 million when all is said and done...

It seems like everyone is writing off Grindhouse, but doesn't anybody think it might grow some legs in the next week or 2? I mean, maybe once word of mouth spreads to joe public as to what the hell it is, it's numbers might improve.

I doubt anybody but fanboys saw it this weekend.

Honestly, there wasn't that big of a push imo. I saw a few ads, mostly during late night and on some cable channels (where its much much cheaper to advertise). I say maybe a $15m advertising campaign. The trailer apparently wasn't attached to many movies, TV ads were sparse, and the talkshow appearances cost a negliable amount in comparison to the rest of the campaign as promoting the film costs travel and per diem, it's generally in their contract when they sign on and included in their price.

Looks like Grindhouse should have been called Serenity 2 due to all the excuses being said to hide the fact it failed to be a hit.

I'm not surprised it failed. Besides being way too long, it just looks like a crappy movie in all the ads I've seen. Straight to video material. Would people that say it is awesome see these movies if they were made by someone other than QT or RR? Probably not.

That depends, if the movies were shot for shot identical to the way they are now? Absolutely, they were a blast regardless of the directors. Plus we'd have new talent to look out for. But the names did attract butts to seats.

Not surprised it bombed, just anticpated it making a little more ($15m-ish).

Agreeably though, B-movies - regardless of how much fun they may be to watch - are a tough sell. Also, the length was fine, I can't picture a double feature really being any shorter, wise move on not having separate credits. But I can see people seeing it as cheesy, I just figured there were more fans of Dead Alive-style stuff out there. And that all said, I'm sticking by my initial comment that it was a poorly advertised movie.

It's possible, but I doubt it. Legs on R-rated flicks is a rare thing. Shame though, the theater experience was part of the fun.
