Are we sure the 'missing reel' cards were actually replacing scenes and not just written in for the 'grindhouse-effect?'

Planet Terror - Awesome, had a blast.
Death Proof - Loved it... but I agree with the second half filled up with too much dialogue (or at least not interesting enough), it's not quite a 'grindhouse movie' (whatever that may mean) when it's held up next to Planet Terror. I was digging it, but I could tell the rest of the theater lost a lot of interest when it slowed down during the farm-chatter.
9/10

Seantn 04-13-07 01:56 AM

Yes, we're sure. At least in the case of Death Proof.

maxfisher 04-13-07 06:27 AM

Finally got a chance to see this last night. Planet Terror was great, as were the trailers. Death Proof was 20 interesting minutes chopped up and inserted into the most tedious dialog I think I've ever heard in a movie. Tarantino's 'this is the pointless shit people really talk about' dialog works well when it's in very short bursts. When you have to sit through 20 minutes of girls arguing about their boy problems, good christ, it just makes you want to rip your ears off. One of my friends thinks that's actually what Tarantino was going for. I think Rodriguez set out to make a fun movie and Tarantino set out to make a cool movie. Only one of them succeeded.

I'm sure it's mentioned somewhere in this thread (skimmed through and did not see), but what was the split-second title that appeared before "Death Proof" was slapped on the screen?

cerial442 04-13-07 08:56 AM

Saw it last night and loved all of it.

They filmed everything they could and just decided on the missing reel later. Non-USA markets are getting longer versions of the films.

Josh H 04-14-07 01:10 AM

Saw it tonight with a couple of buddies and we all absolutely loved it and agreed it was the most fun we'd had at the movies in years!

We all liked Planet Terror a little more, but also loved Death Proof.

The fake trailers and missing reels were great!

My favorite moment from the trailers is a tie between the facial expression of the one woman on the right during the Werewolf Women of the SS title freeze and the line in the Thanksgiving trailer:

(dips finger in blood from decapitated man, tastes it)
"It's blood!" (long pause) "That bastard!"

actually Michael Biehn's response to "it's blood" is:

"son of a bitch!"

Could not agree more with your post. Death Proof was a POS after the first twenty minutes. Why they decided to make that girl a female Jules is beyond me. Horrible dialog, most of the movie made little to no sense, and as mentioned, not nearly a Grindhouse type movie in the later parts. It was almost as if he just wanted to re-imagine Vanishing Point.

Finally got to see this movie today; I'd been looking forward to seeing it for months, but was a bit put off by some of the reviews. My wife went with me because she knew I wanted to see it, but I was a bit hesitant to how she would react since she's not generally very interested in horror films.

The theater wasn't very full and, as seems to be the case all too often for me, the theater goers seemed to lack any sense of humor. Both my wife and I LOVED Planet Terror which surprised me since I haven't liked a Rodriguez film in a long time. It was chock full of hilarious segments that has a rolling on the floor practically; however, noone else in the theater laughed at anything that was going on on screen which always makes us a bit uncomfortable. We thought Machete and Werewolf Women of the SS were great trailers, lukewarm on Don't and Thanksgiving. Then Death Proof came on and everything ground to a halt for us. This type of movie should have never had nearly as much dialogue as Tarantino put into this film, and it was deadly dull dull dull. We liked the final 20 minutes, but really that was about it for Death Proof.

If the studio releases these separately, we'll definitely get Planet Terror, but the only way I'd pick up Death Proof is if they release them together as they were shown in the theater.

I'd give Planet Terror 4/5 and Death Proof 2/5.

Anybody catch the "Jack Burton" tanktop from Big Trouble in Little China hanging on the bar wall in Death Proof? That really made my day.

RichC2 04-14-07 05:39 PM

Re-watching the trailer, it seems like some shit was cut out of Death Proof, what happend to the other car wrecks dammit. (The way the movie was going, they certainly didn't happen during the missing reel, and Tarantino is a good action director.) Ah well, still love the way it turned out. Maybe in the full version.

Done trying to defend the pic though, as everyone seems to have a different interpretation and reaction to it (the term "useless dialogue" is the only one that irks me. I think that may of been the issue in some instances, Tarantino tried too hard to make almost every scene entirely relavent.)

Here's to hoping they do eventually release the grindhouse experience on DVD, easily the most fun I've had at the theater this year.

DVDTalker002 04-14-07 10:39 PM

Planet Terror was hilarious, and I loved Rose.

Death Proof is possibly the worst movie of all time... Worst dialouge in a movie hands down. I wanted to fucking kill someone as I watched it. Half of the theatre actually walked out on it. 3 guys yelled THIS MOVIE SUCKS.

If you're thinking of that one car that explodes from the rear and flips forward, that's actually from Machete. Just noticed that on my 2nd viewing.

Death Proof also improved for me on the 2nd viewing...As far as the 1st group of dialogue-ridden girls goes (Still warming up to the 2nd group) but damned if the car stuff still doesn't kick a lot of ass. Once again, applause from the crowd as soon as "THE END" popped up.

I came extremely close to leaving the theater during death proof. not the worst movie of all time, but truly terrible. They completely abandon how much of a badass Stuntman Mike is and turned him into a sniveling coward. Ridiculous.

CharlieK 04-15-07 12:06 AM

'Death Proof' seemed to be a chick-flick that's an action movie instead of a romantic-comedy. It makes sense that this super macho guy would be taken down and end up a sniveling coward. That's what chicks would want to see happen. Tarantino seems to be very in tune with his feminine side.

Yes, as previously mentioned, that scene was from the Machete trailer but it is made to look like it's from one of the main features when shown in the trailer. Also, quite a bit was cut out of Death Proof. The "missing reel" was really removed to keep the runtime down, not to be "cute" in the tradition of the Grindhouse aspect. Also, some scenes were removed when the 2nd Group of girls are introduced, including them picking up Zoe from the airport, and Stuntman Mike spying on them as they are at a gas station.

Roger Lococco 04-15-07 03:13 AM

saw it twice, both times the biggest crowd reaction was from Rosario's finishing move.

Are you sure you don't mean Zoe?

I'm sure he meant Rosario's. That probably got the biggest reaction in my theater as well.

Yeah, he means Rosario.

RichC2 04-15-07 11:06 AM

Yep, Rosario's kick had the crowd going here as well.
