Disturbia

Couldn't find a thread for this one.

After checking out Blades of Glory this afternoon I walked by a cardboard advertisement for this one on my way out of the theater. It looks the same as the theatrical poster, but I noticed the yellow lenses of the binoculars were back lit somehow. Upon closer inspection I saw that there is actually a small camera hidden in the middle, and the image in the lenses was myself looking back at me. Pretty cool, and unique, if I do say so myself. The basic style of the poster is here if you want to look.

This I will definitely go see if the reviews are anything but positive.

I'm assuming that this is a remake, right?

Perkinsun Dzees 03-31-07 05:56 AM

This movie looks kind of cool. I like that it's not just a retread like "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" or "Amityville Horror" but that they actually came up with an original premise hasn't been done before (although they did crib the "guy thinks he sees a murder take place next door" from "Fright Night"). Looks like it could be really scary.

Uh, you might want to rent a film called "Rear Window."

I can't tell if that was sarcasm or not...this movie is just as much a retread as TCM and AH.

As Fincher said, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zC5UhVwcIyg .

More directly, I couldn't stop thinking about: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ltyU1Rmywa0

Uh, I think we all need to rent a little movie called "Fright Night" from the 80's. Rear Window completely ripped it off.

I think he was referring to original Hitchcock movie.

ReduxGuy 03-31-07 01:49 PM

Rear Window for the prepubescent!

Yawn.

BJacks 03-31-07 08:39 PM

I had really biased expectations going into the film (thought it was going to be absolutely terrible like most of the current teen thriller crop), but came out pretty surprised. It's well acted with some good suspense. Definitely not the most original thing around, but it's a mostly fun 90 minutes.

Shia's a cool kid (and being prepped as the next leonardo); had a smoke with him after the screening. Nerded out over transformers.

I can't figure this out. Serious? Sarcastic?

Take a guess... I'll give you two chances!

JPRaup 04-05-07 01:31 AM

Going to a screening tomorrow, will let people know how it is

Supermallet 04-05-07 01:36 AM

Looks awful.

Take Alfred Hitchock's "Rear Window" + "The Burbs" with a splash of any teen movie made post 1994 and you get Disturbia.

Disturbia is indicative of all that is wrong with horror today: Bland, banal, and unoriginal, the film relies on so many cliches that it wouldn't do justice to list them all. The teen leads are flat and wholly unsympathetic. The villain is rote and more smugly annoying than scary. The fact that this film is nominally a remake of Rear Window makes it all the worse. It would be one thing if the screenwriters simply came up with a bad story, but to take an excellent film and ravage it is simply a crime. It bothers me on a deep and personal level that everyone involved with this film got paid for it, because it makes it feel all the more like a mob ordered hit, aimed at the film going public.

Better? ;)

Seantn 04-05-07 07:37 PM

I'm confused - have you seen this film? The first post of yours said "Looks awful", indicating you hadn't seen it. Then this one is reviewing the film as if you have seen it.

Supermallet 04-05-07 07:57 PM

It was a joke, Sean. Although I highly doubt my comments are far off.

JPRaup 04-05-07 08:47 PM

Just got back from a preview screening. What a suprise. I came in with low expectation and I enjoyed the hell out of it. It grabs you for the first 10 mins then kinda slows down for about 20 minutes but picks right back up and is nonstop excitement the rest of the movie. The performances are great, especially by David Morse as the villian. Shia also does a very believable job as he is struggling with his house arrest. There are countless jump scenes, but most of them are just David Morse's character showing up at unexpected times. Recommended, you will only be disappointed if you are expecting another "Rear Window". 7/10

nateman 04-05-07 10:48 PM

if Mr.David Morse is in this im buying it on DVD. hes great in anything he does. i kind of like Shia as well 'even stevens' was a half decent kids show, it was tolirable compared to 'lizze mcguire' & that awful 'zoey 101' show.

Such an awkward new TV commercial for it, playing System of a Downs "Lonely Day". It doesn't fit at all.

yea It's weird when they play it in the movie. Also about four times I saw boom mics in the top of the picture. three times towards the beginning of the film and once or twice towards the end.

That was the fault of your projectionist. Always complain when you see that -- it means the movie has been misframed.
