marketing is good for the first weekend. what about weekend two? that's word-of-mouth.

Seantn 11-06-07 09:39 PM

In that case, Stardust did well in word of mouth. In all of it's weekends following the opening weekend, it had quite small drop offs (indicating good word of mouth). Same with overseas box office.

Aug 10–12 4 $9,169,779 - 2,540 - $3,610 $9,169,779 1

Brack 11-06-07 09:45 PM

38.4% drop off small? How times have changed.

You said after the second weekend, but isn't the 2nd weekend the most important weekend in terms of continued success?

Seantn 11-06-07 09:49 PM

No, I said after opening weekend.

Brack 11-06-07 09:52 PM

You also weren't alive in the 90's.

Brack 11-06-07 09:56 PM

Good word-of-mouth would indicate an almost equal, or even a rise in gross for a movie that opened at only $9m. For big blockbusters that have huge openings, it's not really possible to have "legs."

Brack 11-06-07 09:59 PM

Hey, what happened to your 50's post?

Trevor 11-06-07 10:40 PM

You two should get a room.

Brack 11-06-07 10:46 PM

If you're both women, I'm down.

I just watched the movie start to finish (I had seen a small part here or there in the past, mostly to see if the effects were as bad as people made em out to be, for the most part, yes, yes they were. Amazingly bad.)

I have to say I didn't really like it. There is a lot to admire and like about the story itself, but I feel the execution was all wrong. Bits such as the ghosts and Robert DeNiro's character were fantastic, but the overall movie was sorely lacking. The dialogue was bland, the plotting was poor, the tone was all over the place and just not right for the movie. And it was long, man was it long. It felt like a good 4 hours before the credits started rolling. While not as over and out boring as Pirates: DMC was, it felt almost as long. However, where that movie didn't have enough plot to sustain it's run time, this movie just didn't manage to keep it involving - it lacked suspense, excitement, heart/warmth (despite trying really hard for it), and just general interest for me.

Overall, it's certainly one of the worst movies I've seen from 2007 though hardly a memorable "bad movie". It wasn't good, but there were enough small things to make me wish it were. Disappointing from a "potential" standpoint.

Brack 01-19-08 11:19 PM

Glad someone else noticed its shortcomings, though I didn't even like the ghosts.

Oh please. One of the "worst" movies you've seen in 2007? I've seen over 120 movies in 2007. And this was in the top 20 movies that I enjoyed last year. Please tell what other "bad" movies you've seen. I just want to see some comparisons.

I said that I've seen, at my last check I couldn't even finish a bottom 10. It isn't an exaggeration but I guess it was unneeded in my original post.

As it stands, my bottom few for 2007:

10. Pirates of the Caribbean 3: At World's End
9. StarDust
8. Spider-man 3
7. Shrek 3
6. Daywatch
5. --
4. --
3. Halloween
2. Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem
1. Skinwalkers

My primary issues with the #6 - #10 was that they simply didn't entertain (occasionally flat out boring). They weren't horrible, just not good. The bottom 3 I stand by, those were terrible films. Honestly, it sucks going to a movie for mindless entertainment, and while delivering the mindless, doesn't deliver the entertainment.

Supermallet 01-21-08 01:29 AM

You didn't enjoy Daywatch? Oh man, I adore that film and its predecessor, Nightwatch.

crashoverdrive 01-21-08 02:26 AM

Im not going to lie when i first saw the trailer for stardust. I didnt have no interest in watching it. Recently i rented it on dvd and my god what a good movie i really liked it and i thought robert deniro was funny in this movie.

Misty Eyes 01-21-08 10:11 AM

Same with me, except I bought it. :)

Haha yeah I hear that a lot, they didn't do much for me. Took me a good 4 or 5 tries to get through Nightwatch (original release) and almost nodded off during Daywatch (in US theaters -- I heard Daywatch was a lot better than Nightwatch.... yeeeaah). Alas all 3 (Night, Day, Stardust) are movies I want to like, they just didn't do it for me.

Giantrobo 02-03-08 03:10 PM

I just rented Stardust and I totally loved it!!

I don't know what happened. I guess I had mostly read bad reviews from dvdtalkers or something because I went in not expecting much and boy was a pleasantly surprised. I loved all the characters, I thought the story was cool, and by the end I was kinda choked up during Ian McKellen's closing narration of a beautiful love story.

< Glad he took a chance.

I have to agree. I just watched it and loved it. This is a great movie and I am simply amazed that it didn't do better in the theaters.

bdshort 02-29-08 10:19 AM

This movie was a huge surprise for me as well. I'd read the book a couple of years ago, and liked it. I don't remember most of the details though, so I basically went in with a fresh slate. I wasn't expecting much, but ended up loving the hell out of this movie! Everything just falls together into a funny, exciting, heartwarming film. Definitely in my top 10 of 2007 list, and a must buy when it's eventually released on Blu-ray. 5/5 :)

Wow

like some other folks in here....

1) I saw the trailer for this in the theaters, thought it looked like some Narnia/Potter/LOTR/? cheesy ripoff and had no interest in seeing it (or even researching it, for that matter).

2) Had no idea that is was sourced from a Gaiman work (at the time it was in the theaters).

I just rented it (due to having picked up on some of the word of mouth) and that it was a great, fun, "magical" film. To repeat what Gaiman was saying during the DVD extras, IMHO it was a great "fairy-tale for adults". I am really sorry I didn't see this on the big screen when I had the chance.

I would hope that it will soon be reissued on BD, as this is one of the few movies I would consider paying the elevated prices in order to have it in hi-def (and whose imagery would take best advantage of the hi-def format, IMHO).

I can naturally see the comparisons with Princess Bride, but to me, both films have a very different "feel". To me PB, used the "fairy tale" as a base element to provide a framework from which elements were added (kind of like starting off with say, a music baseline and building it into some jazz). Stardust, OTOH was much more of the "fairy tale", just told with more of a Gaiman styling.

If anybody out there gets a chance to rent this, I would encourage you to do so. I almost totally missed it, and IMHO the movie really deserves a wide audience.

I have it on HD-DVD and it looks pretty good. The Audio is very good, just Dobly Digital Plus but it sounds great

fumanstan 04-12-08 06:03 PM

I held off getting this on DVD, but i'd definitely pick this up on Blu-Ray if it shows up.

There are very few movies I have recommended to others where everyone has agreed with me, this is one of them. It's truly a great little film. And I will GLADLY double dip on a Blu-Ray release.

Giantrobo 04-12-08 06:46 PM

I loved it enough to :up: to both posts.
