If it really is an undisputed classic, chances are the problem isn't that the film didn't live up to the hype. It's probably that the viewer missed something, or went into the viewing experience with a chip on his shoulder.

And "Million Dollar Baby," and "Crash," "Last Temptation of Christ" and several other movies mentioned are not undisputed classics.

There is a reason these films are seen the way they are, yes, but to deny that even the most revered films have detractors is silly, and what's worse is making it somehow the viewers fault that they "missed something" or "had a chip on their shoulder".

In these types of threads, there's invariably confusion between "like" and "good". So, one has to ask the question: Overhyped/overrated in terms of personal taste or in terms of artistic merit?

The fact that you might dislike Citizen Kane or 2001 A Space Odyssey has absolutely no bearing on the artistic merit of the films. And classics won't stop being classics because you don't like them.

Oh, and for the record, when have films like Crash, Saving Private Ryan and Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon (to name a few) joined the ranks of "undisputed classics"? I must have missed that memo.

Probably the worst comedy I've ever seen.

My submission is easy - Blade Runner.

Out of curiosity: what do you consider a great comedy movie and a great science-fiction (NOT "Sci-Fi", but Science Fiction) movie?

For me: A Clockwork Orange. Didn't like it at all.

Here is a question for everyone. What movies of today will be the new classics and at what point is a movie old enough to be considered a classic ?

I consider films as "old enough" if they are from period 1900s to 1950s and dividing into silent and non-silent films. 1960s onwards I tend to think of films as part of 'contemporary cinema' and modern classics up to today's which are harder to define because they have yet to stand against test of time.

Technically, it's satire, but I would easily classify it as science fiction. It's an extrapolation of 20th century culture, consumerism, politics, and social idiocy into a futuristic world that, while admittedly hyperrealized, operates on a logical construct of guidelines and rules.

Just a great movie all around.

I love you. In a totally non-homo sort of way, but I love you.

(Although we're gonna have to talk about the Blade Runner hate...)

He makes decent popcorn flicks but he's never ever made a picture that had me thinking afterwards. Now that I think about it, I don't understand why he's not bashed as much as Michael Bay is.
Because Spielberg has more talent in his mustache than Bay does in his entire genealogical tree.

It's not futuristic though, it's a conglomeration of technology and styles from the entire century, thus the beginning intertitle "somewhere in the 20th Century." There's really no element of technology in the film that would qualify as being science-fiction or futuristic, and some of it, like Sam's phone, are positively retro.

I didn't say they don't have their detractors. I implied that the detractors are wrong.

Says you.

I think eXcentris said it best:

Probably my favorite comedy of all time is Airplane! I also enjoy some of the same SNL alum comedies that started around the same time as Belushi. Stripes, Trains, Planes, and Automobiles, as well as Ghostbusters all make me laugh every time I watch them. Animal House and The Blues Brothers just don't do it for me. But since comedy is sooo subjective, there's really no rhymn or reason to it.

2001: A Space Odyssey - I really tried with this one but it bored me to tears.

Easy Rider - This was a product of its time and nothing more.

Rebel Without a Cause - This is an alright film but unfortunately it's seriously dated. Those kids "problems" are laughable by today's standards.[/QUOTE]

I completely agree with all these being overrated..

I'd also put on this list
*In The Mood for Love (Hated this film)
*E.T.
*Yankee Doodle Dandy
*West Side Story
*Klute
*Nashville
*A Christmas Story
*Chicago

This is recent, But I never understood its popularity. The Sixth Sense, I blame its success for the creation of the PG-!3 horror movie.

Ah, but then you imply that there's such a thing as a wrong opinion. And when you start doing that, you start digging yourself into a hole.
