I'm hoping this has just the right light-hearted (but not juvenile) tone that Captain Marvel needs to work today. I'm pleased by what I've seen so far.

Man, let it go.
At first I wouldn't have wanted a light hearted Shazam movie. I never liked the Ordway-inspired series or the Jeff Smith veresion.
But seeing these pictures , I'm glad they're going with this direction.
I thought Zachary Levi put on the muscles until I saw this pic. Costume looks awesome though.
No but seriously, this looks great. Just what I want from a Shazam movie.

I believe he did put on some muscles but it was in a short time from casting to production (3 months IIRC).

The muscles in the costume are supposed to look fake. He's a 12 year old's image of what a superhero should look like. When Billy becomes Shazam, it's almost like putting on a costume. At least, that's what they're going for in the movie.

First off, if you hated Ordway's run AND Jeff Smith's mini, well, you have no heart. I'm actually not sure how you could do a Captain Marvel movie as anything but "superhero Big" since that's such a big part of his character, and regardless of how much we talk about it here the casual audience is going to have to be convinced he's not just a Superman clone. I guess you could do jaded kid becomes a crappy adult superhero and has to learn to be good, which is a little of what Johns was going for.

I really hope they avoid even referencing Johns' run. Johns is my favorite modern comic writer but his vision for Shazam was tortured at best. Supposedly the movie is not using Johns' ideas.

When I was a teenager I gave Ordway's regular The Power of Shazam! series a chance and it was boring with average art. I however, did like Mark Waid and Humberto Ramos's Impulse series.
The only Captain Marvel comics I really enjoyed was the original golden age stories and Paul Dini/Alex Ross's Shazam:Power of Hope special.
Thank goodness for that.

I've been seeing this thread popping up for some time, clicking on it for the first time right now I'm shocked to find out I was wrong about it being a reboot of the Shaq movie that apparently is called Kazaam and not Shazam.

No, Shazam is the name of a genie movie staring Sinbad that people swear they remember but doesn't actually exist.

There is apparently some mass hysteria where a lot of people think Sinbad starred in a genie movie, likely misremembering Kazaam crossed with Sinbad's name, ie: the Mandela effect.
