I'm waiting for the National Gallery's showing of 'Damnation' (next month) and a eight hour block of time for me to watch my DVD of 'Sátántangó' before I come to a decision about Tarr's films, I really really struggled through "Werckmeister harmóniák"

If you didn't like Werckmeister it's hard to imagine you'll like the rest of his work. For me, the first time I saw it I had no idea a movie could be that Earth shattering, and could completely transform the way I viewed life. Then I saw Satantango...

Whoa, I made up all the names on my list just to look cool...

Good look trying to fit Satantango in Giles!

And now I see Autumn Almanac (Tarr) is available on DVD! And Eureka (Aoyama) too! I so need to see these again. I've been waiting to see Eureka again for 6 years...

I was thinking of trying to watch it on President's Day, and then go over to to AFI and see Barry Lyndon - ten hours later, I'll still have red bull and coffee in my veins and a glaze over my eyes.

Ha!

I couldn't imagine watching Satantango at home, but that's because I don't have an immersive (or any) home theater.

At least on DVD you don't have to wait through the two half-hour intermissions... 450 minutes in a row.

Is there a midnight showing of Jeanne Dielman, 23 Quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles playing that night too?

Considering my list is deficient of female directors, I think Chantal Akerman belongs on it. Jeanne Dielman... was a seminal film for me. I just haven't had the chance to see much else of her stuff (saw her doc From the Other Side a few years ago). But if I did come across her name on a screening listing I would make it a point to check it out.

And Claire Denis too... I still find The Intruder haunting my memory.

I'd love to see someone do that. Maybe on consecutive Saturdays one month, with The Mother and the Whore, Celine and Julie Go Boating, and La Commune rounding out the month.

funny you should mention, Celine and Julie which I just saw, what a fun, very quirky film...

as for female directors I find it upsetting that Lynne Ramsay (after the International success of 'Ratcatcher') only followed up with 'Morvern Callar' - what a promising debut and second feature... and then... nothing new.
