Please help settle a bet, re: The Oscars

Can someone be nominated more than once in a single category?

ie, could Leonardo Di Caprio be nominated in the same acting category this year for Blood Diamond and The Departed?

The Mrs owes me if i'm right

But that only applies to actors, directors can be nominated twice for the same catagory (which could be the case for Eastwood). Soderberg was nominated twice in 2000 for Erin Brockovich and Traffic (for which he eventually won).

It's on a category by category basis. So you both lose the bet. Send your money to me.

Knowing the limitations on one actor being nominated in the same category for two movies, I would think that one of the performances would be submitted for Supporting Actor if possible. Like the Leo example, I think he could easily fit into BSA for The Departed.

Clearly you've never been married. The wife is always right, no matter who chose what.

if a director can be nominated twice in the same category i think an actor can two.
Steven Soderbergh was nominated as best director twice at the 73rd annual awards. For traffic and erin brokovich.

why would an director be able to nominated twice in same category but not a actor???

It's a bummer actors can't be nominated more than once in any given category; I thought it would be funny to see Matt Damon up for Best Actor in The Good Shepard and The Departed and see Leonardo DiCaprio up for Best Actor in The Departed and Blood Diamond. Then something random like Sasha Baron Cohen for Borat!

Because the Academy has a rule that forbids an actor/actress from being nominated more than once in the same category, and it's a rule that just applies to the four acting categories.

This is the reason Jamie Foxx was nominated as a supporting actor for Collateral even though he was in 90% of the film and had more screen time than Tom Cruise or anyone else.

The members of each category can incorporate their own rules for nominations and awards, so there's inconsistencies across the board.

No. The acting categories are governed by a special rule that allows a person to be nominated just once in a category.

Based on the SAG nominations, it appears that DiCaprio in The Departed is going to be considered a supporting performance.
So he still could get two nominations --Best Actor for Blood Diamond, and Best Supporting for Departed

John Williams was nominated twice for Original Score last year.
