Why doesn't Guy Pearce make more movies?
 

That guy was great in two of my all-time favorites...Memento and LA Confidential. He had that one month where he had both the Time Machine and Count of Monte Christo, but it sure seems like he disappears for long stretches. Whatever movies he's been making, I haven't heard of them (looking at imdb). Did hear that he might be doing the LA Confidential sequal? But I was ready to anoint if one of my favorite actors a few years ago, just didn't make the movies!

I was watching Memento the other day, and thinking the same thing. Maybe Chris Nolan can get him to play Harvey Dent in the next Batman.

He was on the Late Late Show a while back and said that Nolan wanted him for the Batman role. I love Bale but he'd be my second choice. Maybe they had a falling out.

This is fantasy casting, but I would've loved to see him as the lead in The Prestige.

I really enjoy watching Guy Pearce, and I wish he was in more movies as well.

Could be he's not been propositioned for any new interesting movie roles to be cast in. Many top rated actors, and actresses are very selective of the characters they portray, and just not accept any offer to star in a movie.

Maybe he doesn't like acting anymore. It's just a profession, and...well, people do change professions.

Interesting to find out I'm not the only person who has had these thoughts (Right down to bringing Pearce into Batman some how...I think Pearce/Bale on the screen at the same time could be damn memorable). I hope Pearce does turn up again as Ed Exley.

Funny you should use that word because he was great in The Proposition. I rented it a couple of weeks ago. It's a gritty/violent western set in Australia in the late 1800s, I believe.

Anyways, I thought he was great in Memento and L.A. Confidential too, but hadn't really seen him in much else until The Proposition.

According to wiki and imdb, he still does quite a bit of theater in Australia, which would presumably take away time for screen roles. Living in Australia probably doesn't help him get every casting call as well.

After Memento, he appeared in The Count of Monte Cristo and The Time Machine, which we box-office disappointments. After that he's done a number of smaller Australian films, as well as a French film, so he is working, just not as visibly.

I heard he has some kind of mental disease where he can't form new memories, so I would think learning lines would be hard for him.

According to IMDb he's got two films in post-production right now, another due for a 2007 release, had a film out in 2004, one in 2005, and three in 2002. That's more than a film a year for five years, and maybe more in the pipeline. It seems to me like he's making plenty of movies.

L.A. Confidential, Ravenous, Memento, The Proposition. As long as he continues to star in good-to-great movies like these, I wouldn't change a thing he's doing with his career because he's definitely doing something right!

I remember when i was in high school back in England and he used to be in the Austrailian soap opera playing Mike that was broadcast everyday on BBC1. I never thought that he would become such a good character actor after appearing in this rubbish. But the show has spawned quite a few other talents as well....Russell Crowe, Kylie Minogue (well if you like tiny squeeky aussie women with huge heads), Holly Vallance (and if you like the hot aussie type of woman with a killer bod), Alan Dale, Jesse Spencer and Natalie Imbruglia.

Maybe he's another Daniel Day-Lewis. Great flicks (Memento, The Proposition), but few and far in-between.

I love Guy Pierce. I thought about mentioning him in the "diverse actor" thread alongside Christian Bale, Gary Oldman, Phillip Seymore Hoffman and the like, but Pierce just hasn't had enough roles to be put on that platform yet.

Yeah i knew its name, but not sure how many in the US had heard of it. I still catch odd episodes when i go back to the UK to see my family. I cannot believe that Harold Bishop is still in it...incredible. When i was at school people used to be split between this and Home and Away. They were both a load of old tosh, but they each had a fair few lookers in the female department.

Guy was my first choice to play Bruce Banner (The Hulk) before Bana was cast. I think he's a great actor. We should see more of him.

I'm surprised noone has mentioned my favorite guy pearce role: The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. If you haven't seen that one, you owe it to yourself to check it out...seeing Guy Pearce, Terence Stamp and Hugo Weaving in drag is pretty memorable;) Talk about your legends all in the same place in unusual circumstances.

Heck I even enjoyed Count of Monte Cristo, he can pull off the prick role pretty well.

At one point in his career, Pearce said: "I take myself too seriously to star in just any old movie." I'm sure this is very much paraphrased by myself, but that was the jist. After being told time and again from his agents and what-not, he decided to "lighten up" and star in big-budget money-makers like The Time Machine and The Count of Monte Cristo, and see what happened? Box office disappointments - not because Pearce wasn't any good, but because the qualitity of the films weren't very good. Memento was low budget, sure, but it had a helluva script and what a story! Plus, a creative director behind the project, and Guy Pearce, of course, in the lead.

L.A. Confidential may have been a "Hollywood Picture," but it was one of those times where Hollywood put out a real quality picture for a change.

Guy Pearce needed to lighten up, I'm sure, but there's a difference between lightening up and going blindly into a project without having any discriminating opinions about it. You think Meryl Streep became a legend because she did just any ole movie that fit under her door? No, and Guy Pearce needs to understand that to become a film legend, you have to open your eyes and discriminate.
