Lets be realistic: we're talking 2, maybe 3 movies tops, if they work. Michael Keaton was *THIRTY SEVEN* when he was cast in Batman, 40 in the sequel. No problem there.

But Superman in the comics ages much like Bart Simpson, so how why would you want to cast someone in their late 30's that is supposed to carry a franchise over a number of years?
That was one of the things I really liked about Dark Knight. They threw in two of Batman's main villains to make one great movie, instead of worrying about how it might affect future movies. Plus, I think it would be really great to have a movie with a seasoned hero, instead of always starting (and re-starting) with new young hero at the beginning of his career. |

That's the mentality that causes a lot of problems with this types of movies. People are making decisions based on creating a franchise when they should be focusing on making one great movie and worry about the franchise later after the success of the first movie.

Then you have people bitch about continuity when they have to change actors. Or because they love the portrayal of the actor but he's not willing or available to do the sequel. The James Bond franchise had different leading men, but the shortest runs for an actor was Lazenby (1) and Dalton (2).

Those rules don't apply to villains. Villains don't top line a superhero movie. The hero does. Villains are guest stars that possibly overshadow the hero, but it's not their movie.

That's fine and dandy. But as a studio, you want to make the most of your film financially. And the studio is in the business to repeat success. You can't take a one film risk on such an iconic character. They tried and it failed, even though Superman Returns made money, to the studio, it was still considered a failure because they were comparing the numbers to Spider-man 2's box office.

Yea. But you don't have to change actors just because he reaches the age of forty. If a 38 year old man is the key to making a great super hero movie, then use him. Then worry about how his "advanced age of 40" can work to the strength of the next movie.
If the first movie goes down in flames, then you really have no franchise at all. And that's kinda the point they're at now. Superman is a title you want to keep returning to the well for. Just as Batman or Spider-man is. WB is only going to gamble on actors with the likes of a Green Lantern or the Flash because they are lessor known to an extent. Unfortunately (or fortunately) Superman is not Indiana Jones. Superman has so many stories out there and he doesn't age. An old Harrison Ford was pretty tough to deal with in KotCS. |
Re: Superman Returns Sequel is a GO!
Its official, Nolan is on board:
http://www.comicbookresources.com/?p...ticle&id=25161 The mild-mannered internet rumors surrounding director Christopher Nolan have stepped out of the proverbial phone booth to save the day for America's first superhero. After rumors swirled last month that the man behind the lens of blockbuster hits "Batman Begins" and "The Dark Knight" would next shepherd the Superman franchise back to screen glory, The LA Times has an interview with Nolan confirming that he will in fact serve as "godfather" to the Man of Steel's film adventures at Warner Brothers with the first installment coming from the pen of David S. Goyer. “A lot of people have approached Superman in a lot of different ways. I only know the way that has worked for us that’s what I know how to do,” Nolan explained to the paper, making it clear that the new Superman franchise would not take place in the same world as his Batman films but would allow Clark Kent to exist on his own as the only superhero of earth. Specific words on story and creative staff for the film were held close to the vest by Nolan in the interview, including word of whether or not his brother Jonathan would direct. For now, Christopher Nolan is focused very much on finishing his next film, the mind-bending action flick "Inception" starring Leonardo DiCaprio. However, Nolan did say that like his own take for "Batman Begins," he hoped to pack his Superman film with as many top notch actors as possible much like the original Richard Donner "Superman: The Movie." “I went to the studio with the analogy of ‘I want to cast the way they did in 1978 with 'Superman,' where they had Brando and Glenn Ford and Ned Beatty and all these fantastic actors in even small parts, which was an exotic idea for a superhero movie at the time," he said. "It really paid off, too. As a kid watching ‘Superman’ it seemed enormous and I realized later by looking at it that a lot of that was actually the casting, just having these incredibly talented people and these characterizations. And Marlon Brando is the first guy up playing Superman’s dad. It’s incredible.” While Nolan did speak well of Bryan Singer's "Superman Returns," he made it clear this new take would be a completely fresh take not connected to any previous films and may not be called "The Man of Steel" as some have surmised. He and producer/wife Emma Thomas deny pretty much everything else mentioned about the project from its supposed name ("Man of Steel") to the choice of villains. Thomas labels those stories "fan fiction." So what does Nolan actually say? This: David Goyer pitched him an approach to "Superman" while they were deadlocked on a plot for "Batman 3." Nolan recalls, "I immediately got it, loved it and thought: That is a way of approaching the story I've never seen before that makes it incredibly exciting. I wanted to get Emma and I involved in shepherding the project right away and getting it to the studio and getting it going in an exciting way." |
Re: Superman Returns Sequel is a GO!
Does that mean that Nolan is going to do another origin story? But then again, that may not be a big deal, because Batman Begins is the best origin superhero movie...it's also good that Nolan is directing because he's more likely to go with a less-famous villain (Brainiac or Darkseid), then the typical first choice - Lex Luthor.

Re: Superman Returns Sequel is a GO!
if he can do for this what he did for batman, this should be brilliant.

"Serving as godfather" doesn't sound like directing to me.

Re: Superman Returns Sequel is a GO!
While i did like the original Superman movie, Batman Begins was a very well done origins movie.
Problem with Singer was going as a continuation of the original film... i just hope Nolan does right by word... |

The same was said when Singer went from X-Men to Superman. I hope these Superman movies don't curse directors.

Re: Superman Returns Sequel is a GO!
The only Singer comic film I liked was the First X-Men, and even then, I felt it was too short.

Re: Superman Returns Sequel is a GO!
Singer's X-Men flicks weren't all that great. Better that the Elektras and Punisher Warzones out there but nothing special. As for Nolan, his plausible superhero approach is what makes his Batman flicks so darn good.

But Nolan's participation should only help this franchise. Even if it's not director, he'll make sure it doesn't suck. The first half of Superman Returns was pretty good, and the airplane sequence was some amazing stuff, but after that, it pretty much went downhill, plodding along in cement. And Kate Bosworth was an awful choice as Lois and Super Kid sucked too. Someone mentioned Rashida Jones as the new Lois. That would be fine with me. I think she could pull it off. I'm just excited that it's a fresh start and we don't have to pay homage to the older films. Yes, the first one is a pretty great movie and the sequel has some moments, but damn, I'm ready for an updated version with no winks or nods to the 30+ year old films. I hope it's not called The Man of Steel. Just call the damn thing Superman. |

According to Dark Horizons, Superman is nearly greenlit for a Christmas 2012 release.

ugh, no... she looks like a drowned rat. It's Rashida Jones. Period.

Re: Superman Returns Sequel is a GO!
she looks to girlish to be LL. We need a woman. Much like RR and Miller said on the Sin City commentary I think Carla Gugino would be the PERFECT Lois Lane.
spoilerized for size..and MAYBE NSFW..it's no nudity but...awkward I guess if someone sees it at work...ahh fuck it..it's a good pic of her. http://www.outofaces.com/wp-content/...-1-610x915.jpg Seeing as how we're not likely to go that route..I again bring up Rashida Jones (The Office, I love you, Man, Cop Out). She's got grade A wit and strong stubbornness of LL. Actually...Gugino could still work out she's 38 and Jones is 34...but maybe Gugino is TOO MUCH woman for Routh's Superman (btw I like Routh). Also she looks nothing like the LL from Reeves films... http://chud.com/articles/content_ima...shidajones.jpg |
Re: Superman Returns Sequel is a GO!
Is Routh even gonna be in this? Although I want him to return, if not him, I think Matthew Bomer (White Collar) would be a great choice.
