I think many of Scorsesci's movies (especially the gangster ones) are dark comedies in some way (mainly in hearing all the ways Joe Peci can swear and him beating up people while swearing) I don't know, maybe its just me.
|
I'll agree partly with that. I never get too emotionally involved with them and can always let out a chuckle here and there.

Do we see anyone's eyes get squeezed out by a vice per se, or a dude getting whacked to death with aluminum bats? List the violent scenes in The Departed. Spoiler:

The more I look back on this movie the more problems I seem to have with it. Something about it just doesnt feel right.
I think what is bothering me is that it almost seems like two seperate movies within itself. The tone of the movie just seems all over the place. The scenes involving Leo were some really fantastic, hard hitting, gritty drama that most have come to expect with these type of Scosese films. The scenes with Damon on the other hand felt more like something out of Ocean's 11. A more light hearted con story than a serious drama. Whenever it was dealing with Damon, it was one joke after another from either Wahlberg, Baldwin, or Nicholson. As soon as it jumped back to Leo, the film seemed to go back to the hard nosed, intense crime drama. Seems like the actors weren't always on the same page with the material, or perhaps Leo just brought out a better/different performance from everyone else. Either way I need to see this movie a few more times, because at the moment I cant decide if I love this movie, or if I dislike it. |
w/ all the Boston accents, I thought this spelling was more appropriate for the flick...

not that this anything to do with 'The Depahted' but that reminds me of the line in 'The Queen' where one of the Palace men is informing Tony Blair on how to address Her Majesty.

Here's my very quick review:
If you want to know how good this movie is, I was up nearly the entire night before with my sick child, probalby got about an hour of rest. We planned on seeing the 10pm show the next day. I was waivering on whether or not I should attempt to actually stay awake through this movie. I finally decided I would. I never once even remotely felt tired. This movie kept me locked in. Great movie. |
I found The Departed to be solid thru and thru. I'd rank it an 8/10

Just saw it and loved it......The ending was shocking but almost too shocking that it became comical..Regardless, Alec Baldwin/Mark Wahlberg jokes were AMAZING!!!!!!!

Just saw it today. I really liked it but thought Infernal Affairs was the better film.
Spoiler:
Those gripes aside, I really enjoyed it and believe it to be a worthy companion piece to Infernal Affairs. |

The assumptions near the end were some of the more entertaining aspects, imho. |

Caught a matinee today, thought it was awesome. Great film. Highly recommended.
I was surprised at all the humor in it, and laugh out loud humor at that...not like your average Scorsese film. |
A great movie from start to end, although the ending got a little comical in it's over-the-top violence.

I have to say that I was somewhat disappointed with this movie.
The cast was amazing, with Mark Wahlberg as a surprising standout, but I had a lot of problems with this movie while it seems everyone else is eating it up and calling it the best movie ever 10 minutes after seeing it once (check it's rank on IMDB). My problems with it... Spoiler:
Don't get me wrong, the first half of the movie had some great moments, there were some hilarious jokes in there, and I loved the placement of the title card a good while into the movie, just to add some great emphasis, but I can't say this is a great movie and it's certainly not anywhere near the 50th best movie of all time (IMDB), despite all of those pluses and some amazing acting. Overall, it was so good I wished it would be better. I'm sure an 8/10 from me won't prevent it from raking in the awards nominations, though, and DiCaprio would be an absolute lock if they put him up for supporting actor (with Damon being the lead)... if not, I can still see DiCaprio nominated for lead actor, with Jack easily picking up the supporting nod, and maybe even one in there for Wahlberg, just because he was such a standout. |
Haha if you don't like the movie, don't try to defend it, you didn't like it you didn't like it.
I thought the last scene fit with the serious/just kidding tone of a majority of the movie. Also, directing is a lot more than just creative camera angles. You'd be amazed at the number of directors that can't keep a tone, style, pace or mood for a full runtime. |

Regarding people who didn't like the movie still defending it, as I said, there's a lot to like in the movie and it's good enough to make you wish that it was even better (that is, if you didn't like it). |

Maybe I missed the answer, but I also had the question

Great flick! Couple of questions, dudes:
1)Is it true that Ed Norton was already cast as the character Leo played, but pulled out of the project during filming because he was beefing wth Damon? 2)Is the movie better than Miami Vice? |
I finally caught this w/ my wife and we both enjoyed the hell out of it. ****1/2 out of five.

Terrific movie - with so many outstanding performances. (Yes, I've seen the IA trilogy and loved it.)
As others have said or implied, one of the rewards of this movie is seeing the "cute guys" (Damon, DiCaprio & Wahlberg) all pull off adult roles, matching two of the best actors ever (Nicholson & Sheen). |

Miami Vice was one of the worst films I saw this year, I really hated it. I really liked the Departed. As for people laughing in the theater at the ending, while that can be a bad thing(like the laughing that was erupting during my screening of Miami Vice), in this case, I think it was just astonishment at the sequence of rapid fire events. I laughed a bit too, but it wasn't because I thought it was silly and I suspect the same thing was going on with the oher laughers.
