Man of the Year

Is this movie going to be as bad as it looks in the commerical?

Also, I don't get the joke: Bruce Springsteen - Secretary of State... Does it have something to do with Born in the USA?

It has potential and could go either way, but looks like it's leaning toward the bad. Of course, I was one of the few that liked Death for Smoochy.

Robin Williams is becoming a cliche in his voice acting - he should stick to that.

looks somewhat entertaining from the previews so i will probably go, but it could go either way with all the funnier moments in the previews.

Man of the Year looks so bad in the commercial, I'm almost surprised they are advertising it. I was about to comment on how it looks bad even compared to other Robin Williams movies, but then I remembered that his last movie was RV.

I was reading that this is actually a comedy/thriller, whatever the hell that means. An early review said it would be interesting to see which aspect they advertised, which is obviously the comedy from the ads i've seen.

In "Man of the Year", Robin Williams stars as Tom Dobbs, a comedian much in the vein of Jon Stewart, Bill Maher, etc., who somehow becomes a presidential candidate and wins the election.

While the concept seems implausible, the start gives an almost plausible way for it to happen. Tom Dobbs is quick-witted and funny and is passionate about the political issues of today. The first act is entertaining enough.

But then the middle section of the film is where the film just sags under its improbable concept, and it bogs down quite a bit, and Dobbs acts in ways that just shouldn't even happen for a president-elect (mainly a series of encounters with the Laura Linney character, who works for the firm who produced the touchscreen voting system used in the election), and it almost derails the films.

The final act is somewhat necessary, but it's also predictable, and doesn't quite overcome its middle act, and limps to a finish.

I did like Christopher Walker in the role as Dobbs' manager.

I give it 2.5 stars, or a grade of C+.

Well, I heard this wasn't exactly the movie Universal has been advertising and they were right. It's much less of a comedy and the marketing is leaving out the MAJOR plot point of the film that drives it... a pretty big oversight/deception that will leave a lot of people pissed off I think. There were a few moments that were good, but this is easily one of Levinson's more disappointing efforts...him and Robin Williams shouldn't be allowed to team up ever again after this and Toys.

I think I'd much rather see someone make the film they're marketing - Late night fake news comedian wins the presidency and highjinks ensue...except cast Jon Stewart and get Larry Charles to direct it. 2 out of 5.

i saw this today and thought it was good. but as others have pointed out, i went in expecting more a comedy based on the trailers. the idea of a "comedy/thriller" was different. i thought it lost a little bit of its steam towards the middle, but overall it was good and like both williams and walken. the way the computer program was fixed seemed a little too easy for any computer person to figure out if you ask me though.

Didn't Chris Rock make this movie a couple years ago?

Hmmm, sort of. This is like the urban remake in reverse.

I honestly cannot stand the "comedy" of Robin Williams. He's decent in dramatic roles, but his delivery for comedy is just so damned awful now-a-days... how he says a line, and almost mugs for the camera... all he is missing is a "wink" when he delivers his ... uhh... punchlines... it's just pathetic.

True, nowadays I much prefer the One Hour Photo & Insomnia Robin Williams to the RV and Man of The Year one. He still is worth some laughs though.
