The 25 Most Controversial Movies Ever
From Entertainment Weekly: http://www.ew.com/ew/article/comment...4_1_0_,00.html
What do you think of the list? What is missing? Which shouldn't be on the list?
Thought Salo would have been there, though I think this is more mainstream. Interesting nonetheless.

What the hell?
12. The Deer Hunter: There has been some criticism of details in the film, such as the hunting scenes supposedly taking place in the Alleghenies of Western Pennsylvania. While the native deer in Pennsylvania is the white-tailed deer, the characters are hunting Elk in the film. The rocky, mountainous terrain portrayed in the film is actually located in the Cascades mountain range in Washington state (Mount Shuksan can clearly be seen in the background of some of the hunting scenes). As these scenes in the film were a major theme (hence the title), the setting error is glaringly noticeable by residents and anyone who has been through the region.

Ok, let's start our own list. How about this classic from 1982. "Butterfly" starring Pia Zadora. She does it with her father (Stacey Keach) in this movie and she actually won a Golden Globe for it? I saw this once a billion years ago, don't ask me why.

Did anyone expect Entertainment Weakly to come up with a decent list?

Funny how in a case like this, "controversial movies" boils down to "movies that have had the largest number of uptight people whining about their content".

22 DO THE RIGHT THING
DIRECTED BY SPIKE LEE (1989)
THE CONTROVERSY While the film was seen by some as a masterpiece (and earned Lee a Best Original Screenplay Oscar nom), others blasted the director as irresponsible, predicting that the film's shocking climax — in which Mookie (Lee) hurls a trashcan through a storefront window, inciting a riot — would evoke similar reactions from urban moviegoers. Thankfully, the film proved to be more of a catalyst for heated debate than a flashpoint for actual violence.

And since when is throwing a trashcan more controversial than anything else in any other film?

Of course, had Do the Right Thing been directed by a white dude, the point would've been lost and that director would've been kicked out of town.

I knew about the banned lyric from Aladdin (It was changed to "where its flat and immense/and the heat is intense") but as to its inclusion - WTF!

I'm surprised Showgirls didn't make the list. I don't think there's anything wrong with it, but a lot of cry-babies (including film critics) were having conniption fits in 1995 during its theatrical release.
