Apocalypse Now vs Full Metal Jacket

Both pretty intense and rambling movies, I'm saying the theatrical release of Apocalypse Now, but if you only want to consider the redux go ahead.

I saw there was a Vietnam movie thread but I think Platoon split votes with Apocalypse Now.

AN, by far.

Saw FMJ once or twice, didn't think it was all that.

FMJ is more entertaining, but AN is just better.

I can watch FMJ over and over - especially the first half, whereas I can go much longer in between viewings of AN, though I'm more blown away each time I watch AN than I am when I watch FMJ.

Apocalypse Now
Full Metal Jacket
Platoon

in that order. And it is hard to rank anything over Kubrick.

Apocalypse Now, but Full Metal Jacket comes at a very close second.

The first half of Full Metal Jacket was brilliant, the second half was OK, so Apocalypse Now gets my vote though I think Platoon is better than Apocalypse Now.

Now, put Apocalypse Now up against Operation Dumbo Drop. Apocalypse Now wouldn't stand a chance.

I was going to say pretty much the exact same thing.

Really, I love Kubrick, but after FMJ leaves basic training, it's a pretty forgetable film. AN is a classic (albeit a muddled one) from beginning to end. AN by a country mile ( or several clicks) for me.

without the 2nd half of FMJ, we wouldn't get 2 Live Crew's "Me so horny, me love you long time"

apocalypse now is a very uneven movie, sheer brillance and then meandering ending.
full metal jacket doesn't reach anywhere near it's height of brillance but is a steadier movie. full metal jacket is a more real portrayal of a soldier's life. jarhead by the way was almost a total rip off of fmj

Guess I'll throw in my 2p since it's the minority vote. I was bored to death with AN:R when I watched it, but rather enjoyed FMJ. Neither rank all that high for me though, not much into war type movies. (granted it's been several years since I've seen either, so who knows, my tastes could have changed, but...)

Full Metal Jacket is the better film, imo. Both are great, though.
