Day of the Dead remake...Starring Ving Rhames and Mena Suvari

And no, Ving Rhames is not reprising his character from the Dawn of the Dead remake. He's actually just playing a different character, strangely.

This is from bloody-disgusting:
Fangoria got an update from screenwriter Jeffrey Reddick on cast reports that have surfaced elsewhere for the Day of the Dead remake, which begins shooting July 23 for Millennium Films and Emmet/Furla Films. Ving Rhames toplines the movie, though not, as has been speculated elsewhere, in a role carrying over from his lead in 2004’s Dawn of the Dead redux; instead, Reddick reveals to Fango that he’ll play Captain Rhodes, the role memorably essayed by Joseph Pilato in George A. Romero’s original Day. Mena Suvari portrays the heroine Sarah (Lori Cardille in the 1985 version), and the supporting cast includes Nick (Drumline) Cannon, Michael Welch, Annalynne McCord and Stark Sands. Click the link for more on the remake. The original follows a group of scientists and military personnel holed up in an underground bunker because the world above is overrun with zombies. The lumbering flesheaters eventually find a way in and wreak havoc on the scientists who've been experimenting on their undead brethren

Damn, he should play the part of John. I want to hear him talk like Bob Marley.

Seantn 07-19-06 11:15 PM

Well maybe we can hear a jamaican Nick Cannon as John, since he has been cast in the film. I mean, one can only hope, right?

RIGHT???!

Even though people resisted the Dawn remake a lot in it's early stages, it still sounded a lot more promising than this. I'm hoping this turns out good.

PopcornTreeCt 07-19-06 11:30 PM

Another zombie movie..yippie.

Jackskeleton 07-19-06 11:34 PM

I'll watch it

Cellar Door 07-19-06 11:45 PM

<-- loves Mena Suvari.

I'll be there.

Supermallet 07-19-06 11:51 PM

<--Hates Mena Suvari.

Dawn '04 was enough. No need for this.

I don't want to live in a world where we only get things we need. :(

Your right, Nick Cannon with a Rastafarian accent may be more atrocious than Ving with one! Can't wait to see this!

Okay, how about I don't want it? :P

This is actually a remake I don't mind. Since the original was fairly mediocre. There is actually room to improve upon it. Unlike with the Dawn of the Dead Remake. Which admittedly was far better than it had any right to be, but still pales in comparison to the original.

Giantrobo 07-20-06 02:53 AM

[chappelle] Fuck Nick Cannon!! [/chappelle]

Anyway, I never liked Day, and I loved both the Night and Dawn remakes so I'll check this out.

Ving Rhames has the role originally played by Joe Pilato in DAY, which is a different character than what he played in the second DAWN.

Joe Pilato's role in the original DAY was also different than the role he played in the original DAWN.

Nothing to add, I just thought that was interesting.

Mr. Cinema 07-20-06 06:21 AM

IMDB shows Steve Miner directing. He's done Halloween: H20, Friday the 13th 2 & 3, Lake Placid, etc...

I love Day of the Dead, about as much as I love Dawn, but a new zombie film is another zombie film, so I'm sure I'll see it.

Considering I never really thought of Dawn '04 as a remake (just a different movie with the same name), I loved it. Now that it appears they're making a more actual remake of Day of the Dead, I'm not so confident. The original has always been my favorite of the trilogy, so they've got their work cut out for them if they plan on winning me over.

I was just going to ask if that had ever been done before- an actor playing two different characters in a movie and it's sequel.

We had a thread on that a few weeks ago. The answer is yes. ;)

Giles 07-20-06 10:40 AM

so is this gonna get a theatrical release or straight to video?

Maxflier 07-20-06 11:00 AM

Been a while since i watched it, but
Spoiler:
didn't the ending of the Dawn of the Dead ramake imply that Ving (and all the other characters) die anyways? So how could he reprise his role (unless of course he did it as a zombie)?

imply is the operative word here, yes.

I don't like this. Especially with such a high-profile actor. Why not just stretch things a little and have him be the brother of the character from the previous movie? You don't even have to mention the fact, just have them share last names.

Return of the Living Dead 1 & 2. Same 2 guys with the strange feeling that this has all happened before....

Giles 07-20-06 12:58 PM

yeah, but the remake wont have Tom Savini's trademark special makeup effects - it'll all be CGI gore effects (bleck!)

Matthew Chmiel 07-20-06 01:20 PM

How a Day of the Dead remake could work:

1. Synder and Gunn sign back on board for directing and writing duties.
2. They take the original script as the inspiration for the remake.
3. Not have Jeffrey Reddick write it.
4. Not have Steve Miner direct it.
5. Not have Millennium Films produce it. Aren't there Sci-Fi Channel Originals needing to be produced?
