Who did it better: Bryan Singer or Richard Lester?

They just played Superman 3 on tv...and I've got to say, it's even more entertaining than Superman Returns. Regardless of Superman 3's silliness, the evil Superman scenes are much more entertaining than all of Superman Returns....

Richard Donner did it best.

Case closed... or do we need another thread about how much you don't like Superman Returns?

When you factor out overall production values (which, I grant you, is a damn big deal) SUPERMAN III was worse than SUPERMAN IV: THE QUEST FOR PEACE. And unlike SUPERMAN II, Richard Lester is wholly responsible for the final product.

So my vote obviously goes to Singer.

I'd vote for Singer over Donner as well. But I'm sure I'm in the minority on that one.

Oh, christ, I just realized, this is a DIFFERENT thread than the other "Singer vs. whomever" thread(s). Stop making these threads. Thank you.

Singer outdoes Lester by lightyears..and slightly edges Donner, but not by much

Superman 3 has about as much value as this thread.

I agree with this:

"the evil Superman scenes are much more entertaining than all of Superman Returns"

But Returns is a better movie overall.

Evil Superman is cool. The Richard Pryor bank scheme is well-done (although its something out of a different movie). Lana Lang is about 1000x hotter than Lois Lane. But that's about it.

Yes, I would take Superman III over Superman Returns any day. It was much more entertaining.

I'd like to add two reasons why Superman III is pretty good:

wendersfan, forget A Hard Day's Night... I just bought Petulia and wow that is a startling film. One of the best (and difficult) films I have seen in some time.

Richard Pryor's parts in Superman III were extremely funny, the movie sucked, but Pryor was great.

There is nothing in Superman Returns that is as good as Richard Pryor in III.

Therefore, Lester

What a coincidence. I just watched Superman III too.
Saw Returns yesterday, then came home and watched 1. Watched 2 and 3 today.
The Superman vs. Clark Kent junkyard scene was one of my favorite ever.

Groucho mentioned Lana, which I agree, but don't forget, III had Pamela Stephenson too.
Anyway, I enjoyed Returns (not as much as 1 & 2) and think overall it is better than III.

I caught some of III yesterday too. It was as bad as I remembered. I enjoy the same parts now that I did back when I first saw it. Evil Superman and the Smallville scenes with Lana Lang. Richard Pryor was entertaining, but he felt like he was in the wrong movie. Thank God Paramount was never able to get Eddie Murphy to do Star Trek IV. It would've been the same disaster.

BTW, it had been so long since I'd seen the movie that I'd forgotten it ended with Lana moving to Metropolis and potentially starting a romantic fling with Clark. Were there originally plans to expand on that in Superman IV?

Just in case no one knows, if you guys all think Lana Lang was hot in Superman III, then you ought to be watching Smallville.

Annette O'Toole plays Clark Kent's mother and, oh yeah, she's still hot.

And, BTW, I'd say Richard Donner who gave a really entertaining flick. However, Singer gave us a non-camp, more serious, adult Superman flick.

Now, if he had only
Spoiler:
left out the kid. Totally unnecessary and it would have given the story a much more dramatic and adult tension in the relationship between Lois and Superman. Especially if that aspect of the story had been left hanging at the end of the movie.
