Spiderman 2, no rewatching value?
Reading the current superman threads showed me most people here in dvdtalk hold spiderman 2 with such high praise in the comic movies arena.
When I saw spiderman 2 in the theaters I thought it was an ok movie, with incredible action sequences. I rewatched the movie last week and I was cringing at parts of the movie. I really thought it was mediocre, thanks to Tobey Maguire being teary eyed for the whole movie. Action is great, villain is great, but there are too many slow soap opera style scenes that really break the movie for me, it was too emo. Does anyone else feel the same way? I can really rewatch other comicbook movies like xmen, batman begins and enjoy every second. |
Yeah sure, I agree with you. I tried watching Spider-man 2 again on HBO the other night and gave up after about 5 minutes. Once was definitely enough.
Yeah those character development scenes are teh suck!!111111!!!!!
 |
Never could understand the sweeping praise for the film, I felt it was ok and fairly enjoyable, but with unnecessary effects and cheese - about the same as the first one. I like the new Batman and Superman films much more.
When Spiderman 2 first came out my brother told me it wasn't very good. He said the first Spiderman was much better. And because of this I've never gotten around to seeing Spiderman 2. I should probably rent it before 2007.
I thought the first film was decent but Spiderman 2 has to be the biggest rehash I've ever seen. I hated it. Every theme from the first movie was pounded down my throat without adding anything to the story (i thinik the last 10 minutes of the movie is the only time something significant happened). They even put in a flashback scene right from the first one to remind us once again that with great power comes great responsibility. I got the point from the first movie that Peter loves Mary Jane but can't really be with her. At least 85 minutes of part 2 were dedicated to Parker crying about this.
Villain in first movie: A scientist Peter admires, experiment goes wrong, man starts talking to himself, Spidey must fight him. Villain in second movie: A scientist Peter admires, experiment goes wrong, man starts talking to himself, Spidey must fight him. Overrated movie. Overrated series. Count me out for part three and any future installments. |
I can and do watch both of the Spider-Man movies anytime and anywhere. Spider-Man 2 probably gets the most play though of any of my comic adaptation movies, so I would have to disagree with you all. I think it deserves its hype.
Enjoyed it during its theatrical run, and have watched the DVD twice. Character development doesn't turn me off.
I don't think the first film has held up particularly well on repeat viewings, but I absolutely loved the second film and have watched it three or four times. It remains just as enjoyable as ever, and one of my favorite films of the past few years.
I'd watch either one of them anytime, but 2 remains my favorite. Plenty of rewatching value on both movies!
I've watched it about 5 times on dvd. It still has its magic.
Especially the train sequence |
I'm not a big fan of either of the Spider-Man movies. Batman Begins, V for Vendetta, and X2 are far superior. They're just cliche and lame IMHO.
Well, I hardly ever see movies more than once in the theater and I saw Spider-man 2 four times theatrically. I have also watched the DVD a good 5 or 6 times so I guess i am going to have to disagree with you.
I disagree. I own the 2-disc SE and the Superbit DVD and I've watched each at least twice. I sold my Spiderman DVD since I hadn't watched it and figured I could borrow one of my friends copies if I ever wanted to watch it. I still remember coming out of the theater astonished that the 2nd movie was a vast improvement over the 1st one. For what it's worth, I consider it to be the 2nd best superhero movie of all time behind Batman Begins.
I enjoyed it more than the first, and thought it had a great mix of action, humor, and yes even "cheese."
I enjoy it everytime. I think it's probably up there with one of the best comic book movies of all time. I think Spider-Man 2 was pretty creative in doing a lot of things that most comic book movies don't. Such as Spider-Man revealing himself, not wanting to be Spider-Man, and having all his close friends and family know his identity.
I can't even count how many times I've seen Spider-Man 2. It's a great film all-around, and an improvement over the first.
I absolutely love Spiderman 2, vast improvement over the first (which I still thought was great). Only scene I dont like is the whole christ pose in the subway train, but the rest is fantastic, infinite rewatchability for me. Still cant decide between S2 or Batman Begins as my favorite comic book movie.
Interesting...Thought I was the only one who didnt care that much for SM 2. I'm still interested in all this character development that went on during the film because I didnt see it.

I guess that makes some sort of simplistic sense - it s indeed difficult to find any character development in a movie that has no people in it. -wink- |
Hate the first.
Thought the second was average when I first saw it, then I bought it on DVD and have YET to make it thru one sitting without being bored to tears. |
I see where you guys are coming from, but felt that Spider-man 2 was not only a huge improvement over #1 (which made me cringe beginning to end) but had some interesting characters and fantastic action scenes.
Replay value is alright for it, I'd prefer re-watching Batman Begins or Superman Returns, as others have said, but certainly holds up on repeat viewings imho. |

The thing I hated the most about S2 is that Macy Gray wasnt in it.
;) |
Also, I always get a little smile on my face when I see the dual Evil Dead homages in the post-surgical scene.
